-Jon Moxley’s music hit and he went to the ring through the crowd. The audience shouted “Moxley” and “Welcome Back” before speaking. Moxley then caused an FCC fine by telling a fan to F off. Moxley described his “demons” who have followed him all his life. Moxley says we all go through life with scars inside and we try to pretend they are not there. He said it is the scars that make us the people we are. No one should be afraid to be their authentic self for the whole world. He said people will write him off, they can do whatever they want. He said he does not run from demons, he beats them. He said he will do what he wants in wrestling in 2022 and he is really free. He said the only thing he drinks is blood these days, and slammed the microphone down.

-The advertising team ran the card down for tonight. [c]

-MJF and Wardlow were backstage, MJF talked about how Wardlow ruined him last week. He said Punk cheated and got a spotty win, saying that if Wardlow had more spice, he would have turned it around. The MJF then apologized to Wardlow for his birthday and he then said he would put down his salary for having laid his hands on him last week. He then said that Spears would give Punk his first loss in AEW.

(1) ADAM COLE & BRITT BAKER vs. ORANGE CASSIDY & CRISIS STATLANDER

Britt Baker and Kris Statlander started, Baker tagged Cole before any contact, Cole then tagged Baker to frustrate the opposing team. Cassidy made his kicks at Baker, who stepped on his foot. Statlander went in and hit a scoop slam, Baker was able to tag Cole in.

Cassidy hit a splash on Cole, the two then ran the ropes while Cassidy hit a DDT and sent Cole to the outside. Statlander then hit a standing vertical suplex on Baker, the two then made moves from the apron to the opposing team. Cassidy and Statlander hugged, Cole and Baker then hit the pump kick and kissed during the break. [c]

Baker and Cole dominated the entire break, Cassidy and Cole hitting double clotheslines and sending both to the mat. Kris and Britt were then in the ring where Statlander worked his offensive and hit a blue thunder bomb to get two. Baker acknowledged and went over to a step-back pinning attempt and then a neck-breaker. Both women got tags, and Cole and Cassidy swapped strikes in the ring.

Cole hit a kick in the head, Orange acknowledged with a Stun Dog Millionaire. Baker stepped in and trampled Cassidy, Statlander came in and got two. She then went to the top, Cole covered Britt’s body and Statlander hit 450 on Cole. Cassidy then came in and almost fell on Cole. Cassidy went after Orange Punch, Cole rolled out and Cassidy tried to dive but was greeted with a super kick.

Baker hit a destroyer on Statlander, then Cole hit a Panama Sunrise on Cassidy for an almost fall. Cole and Baker then grabbed the ring side table and placed it on the hard comb side of the ring. Cassidy then accidentally sent Baker through the table. Cole struck a low blow, then The Boom on Cassidy for the pinfall victory.

WINNER: Adam Cole & Britt Baker at 3 p.m.

(Case analysis: A really fun match that seemed like the end of the Cole / Cassidy story. I would say that mixed tag matches, which do not allow equal competition between all participants, are the worst type of match imaginable in all professional wrestling. But this was a high watermark in this genre of wrestling)

-Jericho was backstage with Santana & Ortiz, Jericho Kingston told GTFO. Santana & Ortiz then turned to Jericho and asked when they had his back, Santana said they will focus on them next week, not inner circle. [c]

-Adam Cole was backstage, he took the microphone and said that Cassidy has been a thorn in his side and he has beaten him every step of the way. Cole intended a light out match against Cassidy next week at Beach Break.

(2) CM PUNK vs. SHAWN SPEARS

MJF joined the commentator team before the match started. Punk hit a GTS to win pinfall.

WINNER: CM PUNK in 10 seconds

(Case analysis: A stark contrast to last week’s Punk fight. I like the direction and use of Spears in this cast. But Punk, who feels dangerous, is a good change of pace.)

-MJF rolled in the ring as the punk celebrated. Punk grabbed MJF’s scarf, MJF was able to wiggle away, but Punk had his scarf in his hand.

-Billy Gunn was backstage and confronted Christian Cage and said his sons deserve a title. Cage asked Gunn to make a statement, and The Gunn Club then beat Cage.

-Cody came out before a promo for his competition show. [c]

Cody put a big ladder in the ring during the break. Cody asked what everyone wanted to talk about, and smiled. Cody said the last match reminded him of the pipe bomb from CM Punk. He said Punk listed things that were taboo, he talked about New Japan and the Ring of Honor. Cody said Punk was not able to do that, but he has a comeback and it’s the comeback of the decade. But Cody said he did all the things that Punk promised, he did them all while the audience cheered. He said he would not go in heels because they cheered on him. He then said that if you disagree with him then you must not be a wrestling journalist, he then clarified and said that it was only if you do not think he started the forbidden door. He then talked about a lot of wrestlers doing things in the last few weeks while he was away. He then made a Walter / Gunther joke.

Cody then talked about the descent of the TNT title and said it was as good as the World Cup. Cody then challenged Sammy to a ladder fight next week and made a contract joke to end the segment.

(Sage’s Analysis: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, which is a Cody campaign from 2022. The Good, was the absolute intensity that Cody displayed as he walked between the ladder and made the entire audience cheer for him. The Bad, which is the length of the promo, 20% of the promo could have been edited to get to the point faster. The ugly one is the part of the Cody character that does not work for me. internal jokes and comments about contracts he did not get and joker de jour that WWE is nervous. If Cody could focus on the parts of his act that got him actively encouraged by this hostile crowd, he would be on the right track. But if he continues all the meta-references and the aspects of the character that say I will not pour, then he will continue to remain in this pattern he has been on.)

-Tony was backstage with Anna Jay and Jade Cargill to make a Rampage match for the TBS title.

(3) MALAKAI BLACK & BRODY KING vs. THE VARSITY BLONDES

Brody King took out Griff Garrison and then Brian Pillman jr. had to make a springboard move. It was portrayed on comments that Black has gotten in Pillman’s head. Black and King then took Pillman along and got the quick pinfall victory.

WINNER: Black & King in 2:00

(Case analysis: I like the crucial victory for these two, things after the match were silly and have not worked for me so far.)

– Malakai begged the audience to get up, they did, and a Pac video was sent showing that he actually has his eyes still.

-A video that sets up an Adam Page and Lance Archer match. [c]

-Trent and Rocky Romero had a video on “cutler cam”, Rocky and Trent said they beat the Bucks in Japan and challenged them to a rematch on Rampage.

(4) LANCE ARCHER vs. FRANKIE KAZARIAN

Archer struck an elbow and took off his shirt. Kazarian then got a few punches in, but Archer quickly took over and worked pulls along the ring ropes. Archer then transferred Frankie from ring corner to ring corner while continuing with strikes and blows. Kazarian made a brief comeback, but Archer knocked Kazarian out of the ring when the next commercial break started. [c]

Kazarian ate chops in the corner when the show returned, Archer continued to get his dominant offense in. Archer tried a choke slam and was reversed. Kazarian got a few pulls in before Archer tried to get Blackout out of the top rope, Kazarian then hit a drop kick with top rope and then a top rope. Archer kicked out with one after that. Archer countered a submission attempt with a choke slam, Archer then hit a big slam. Archer then hit a Blackout for the win.

WINNER: Lance Archer at 9:00 p.m.

(Case analysis: A really slow fight that defined and reminded me of Lance Archer in the ring and got warm for himself and then for Page when he came out.)

– After the match, Dan Lambert came on the microphone and backed Archer. He said Adam Page was not from the same generation as Lambert or Archer. Lance Archer grabbed the microphone and said look at what I want to do with you. Archer then put a chair up on the entrance ramp and put up a Blackout, but Page came out and saved. Page and Archer quarreled with Page and knocked Archer out of the ring.

-Dante Martin said Lee Moriarty and Matt Sydal were his brothers until his real brother returns. Ricky Starks replied that he has no friends, Hobbs told Dante to keep an eye on all his sides. [c]

-Crisis Statlander and Red Velvet were backstage, interrupted Leyla Hirsch. Red Velvet tried to bring peace, and Leyla laid her out while they all quarreled.

(5) SERENA DEEB vs. SKYE BLUE

Serena and Skye struggled to grab the lock, the fight ended on the apron as Deeb hit a neck snap in the ropes and then had control of the fight as she catapulted Blue into the bottom rope. Deeb then hit a neck breaker. Deeb then hit Detox, then hit Serenity Lock and knocked Skye Blue out.

WINNER: Serena Deeb clocks 4:00

(Case Analysis: A fine fight that continued to build Deeb as the # 2 heel in the division.)

– Ethan Page shouted Jon Moxley and said he was ready to step down. He said he has won, Page asked for the fight on Rampage.

-A promo video Hook was shown when it was announced that he would be in action on Rampage.

The Announce team ran down Rampage and next week’s Dynamite. [c]

-Matt Hardy and Andrade announced a deal, Andrade gets 51% and Hardy gets 49%. Hardy will be CEO and Andrade will be president. The goal for Darby was announced.

-A video from Caster and Bowens was shown before the match, where they made fun of Sting.

(6) STING & DARBY ALLIN vs

Caster took Sting out as he entered the ring, the fight spilled out with The Acclaimed putting a chair up on Darby’s next as they beat him into the ring post. Doctors then looked at Darby at the ring edge while Sting watched. It was now Sting alone when the bell rang. Sting worked over Bowens and then kicked Caster off the apron. Sting threw Bowens and Caster onto the stairs. Back in the ring, Sting drops drops in the corner until he ran into an open buckle. Caster and Bowens then began a beatdown on Sting when the final break started. [c]

Sting made a comeback and put Caster in Scorpion Death Lock, Bowens then hit a boot and Sting no sold it. Bowens then struck a drop kick and broke the sting. On the outside, Bowens Sting hit with the boombox, and then the plan was to slam him on the stairs. Darby then flew into the frame, rescuing Sting and getting the legal mark in.

Darby then hit a coffin fall from the outside and then fought in the ring until the acclaimed worn Darby down and hit Mic Drop. Sting saved the pinfall and then took the fight to the stage area. Sting then dived from the stage and through a table with Bowens in between. Darby thin hit a coffin fall for the pinfall victory at Max Caster.

WINNER: Sting & Darby Allin at 1 p.m.

(Case Analysis: As it’s a habit for me now, I’m investigating how I think these Sting main events are going to be. But they turn out to be super fun ways to end AEW shows. The place outside the scene was pretty amazing, Sting continues to expand in the ring in AEW)

Final Thoughts: A very newsworthy show. The Return of Moxley and The Cody Promo are the two big ones. I’m sure the discourse on Cody will be as interesting as ever. Cole & Baker as a team worked well, Sting & Darby had a fun main event. Punk and Archer showed dominance in the ring. I thought this was a pretty good show overall and look forward to a live Rampage this week.
