The mission of the Center for Innovation in STEM
Education (CISE) is to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to the forefront of K-16 education through leadership and
service. CISE is a regional center focused on enabling transformative and inspiring STEM learning experiences. Our partnerships with
schools, districts, community colleges, local and national organizations, philanthropic and industry leaders serve to broaden our impact
across institutions and our local and global community.

Guided Pathways for STEM (GPS)

GPS is a program that provides
evidence-based academic support activities as well as non-academic support activities to meet the basic needs and improve the well-being of
STEM majors. Its innovative approach makes nearly every service available to participating students at the partner colleges, as well as
CSUDH. GPS’ student-centered, holistic design aims to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students earning STEM
undergraduate degrees. By meeting students’ academic and nonacademic needs, GPS will improve graduation rates and develop students who
are well informed, have strong self-determination, can advocate for themselves, have a strong sense of belonging, and are empowered to make
choices for themselves.

About the GPS Academic Coordinator

The GPS Academic Coordinator is
responsible for coordinating all GPS academic support services. The Academic Coordinator
will work closely with the GPS lead coordinator, non-academic activities coordinator, career development and
engagement specialist, and community college advisors, and will collaborate with STEM faculty, staff from other programs, and departments on
and off-campus to provide ongoing proactive academic support to GPS scholars. Important functions include overseeing the implementation of
and providing proactive advising and counseling, collaborating with and supervising a team of advisors on and off-campus, monitoring the
progress of GPS scholars, and collaborating with partner community colleges. Perform
duties in a fast-paced
environment under limited supervision.

This position is a full-time, salary-exempt, benefited position, plus employer-sponsored
health, dental vision, life insurance, retirement program, and sick/vacation pay.

Annual Salary Range: $62,400.00 – $66,560.00

The Academic Coordinator reports to the GPS Lead Coordinator and the GPS Project Director.

Primary Position Responsibilities

Student Developmental

  • Provide
    comprehensive academic advisement, individually and in groups, to GPS scholars. Responsible for entering advising notes after each advising
    session into the Toro Student Collaborative (TSC).
  • Perform in-depth analysis of student skills, abilities, previous academic performance, and factors contributing
    to the student’s academic progress to assist students in program planning, course advising, major, and career exploration. Complete
    individualized advising worksheets and maintain detailed and current records on each assigned scholar, including the program of study
    outline, quarterly academic progress, counseling/advising contacts, referrals, etc.
  • Assist in training staff in proactive advising; recruit and select peer coaches; oversee implementation of proactive
    advising and counseling, and provide proactive advising and pre-enrollment advising.
  • Lead program activities, such as planning and implementing the Pre-Semester Bridge to Knowledge, facilitating
    monthly seminars, assisting with the individualized academic roadmap, managing tutoring services, training and supervising peer coaches,
  • Use professional judgment to develop
    solutions to individual student problems, of considerable difficulty, which represent integrative approaches comprising appropriate
    referrals to campus services and other resources. Adjust approaches and techniques in the face of unpredictable responses and rapidly
    changing circumstances.
  • Implement
    innovative ways of encouraging and supporting the personal developmental needs of a diverse student
  • Support with planning,
    developing, and conducting retention-related workshops and/or sessions, as required.
  • Maintain regular contact with scholars on caseload and monitor each student’s academic
  • Participate in regular
    departmental and partner meetings.
  • Coordinate all academic support activities with GPS Community College Advisors at partner community

Liaison and Campus

  • Represent the
    department in university meetings and serve on relevant committees.
  • Initiate and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups, including
    faculty, staff, student organizations, and off-campus community groups.
  • Partake in appropriate professional development activities to remain current on relevant issues pertaining to
    higher education and the recruitment and retention of low-income and high-risk students.
  • Participate in campus-wide events and programs, which seek to recruit, retain, or
    encourage the success of low-income and environmentally disadvantaged students.
  • Coordinate academic GPS activities with staff at the partner community

Successful candidates will
have an experience that reflects the following:

  • Knowledge of GE, major, and graduation requirements.
  • Knowledge of university policy and procedures regarding all academic
  • Ability to interpret and use
    appropriate PeopleSoft admission, registration, advising, financial aid screens.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures governing academic probation, disqualification,
    academic renewal, and reinstatement.
  • Knowledge of interviewing and counseling skills and the ability to apply these to the counseling
  • General
    knowledge of financial aid processes and policies.
  • Ability to interact and work cooperatively with a diverse student population and
  • General knowledge of individual
    counseling techniques.
  • Ability to analyze
    complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed

    Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, and Teams


  • A master’s degree in Counseling or in a STEM field or a directly related field.
  • Possess outstanding leadership,
    organizational, planning, time management, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Skill to use technology tools such as
    word-processing, databases, and web-based programs that typically underpin and support program efforts and improve the efficiency of systems
    and processes.
  • Experience with advising
    and counseling skills. Skills to provide academic, career, and personal advising in a university setting. Listening skills and ability to
    respond effectively to concerns and problems, including difficult or unpleasant situations.
  • Excellent writing skills to compose and edit correspondence, reports, and published
  • Knowledge of best practices as
    they relate to transfer programs, services, and delivery systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a diverse population of faculty,
    students, staff, and the public.
  • Flexible
    and adaptable to quick turnaround deadlines with short notice
