Rep. Michael McCaul, the top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Fox News that the United States has no intelligence in Kabul outside the airport, marking a victory for the Taliban, Russia, China and Iran.
“The Taliban, their streaks just got bigger,” McCaul told Fox News in an interview.
“We have no intelligence on earth now,” he continued. “We are completely dark. With the exception of the airport, we will be dark.”
McCaul told Fox News that there has been no attempt to set up intelligence capabilities in another nearby country. He described the situation as “a nightmare unfolding before your eyes.”
“It is a victory, not only for the Taliban, but for Russia, China and Iran because we can no longer see their activities in the region. “
Numerous reports have indicated that the Taliban track down or kill anyone who has found connections to the United States, despite promising to pardon them. McCaul told Fox News that he had been asking the Biden administration for several months to evacuate interpreters and Afghan partners.
“They have completely failed to do that,” McCaul said. “The intelligence community was very clear and had given a very gloomy assessment of the conditions on the spot. The Biden administration chose to ignore this intelligence.”
“This decision will have long-term consequences for the status of the United States in the world,” McCaul added.
The Texas Republican said the Taliban “is still working with al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations in Afghanistan, from which they can conduct external operations to kill Americans in the United States, but also our allies in Europe.”
He said Afghanistan would become a “breeding ground for terrorism”.
