Anthony Mackie reportedly signs Marvel Deal to return

Anthony Mackie has officially signed up to star in Captain America 4 following his acclaimed transformation in the Disney + series Falcon & the Winter Soldier.

Anthony Mackie has reportedly closed a deal to officially play with Captain America 4. Mackie has worked in the industry since 2002, starring in films such as 8 Mile, Million dollar baby, and The Hurt Locker. The actor officially got his MCU debut as Sam Wilson in the 2014s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sam found himself trapped in a government conspiracy that revealed that SHIELD was actually run by Hydra, and the adventure saw him and MCU’s original Captain America, Steve Rogers, form a close bond. Sam would become the hero Falcon and assist Steve in various other missions.

Sam Wilson served primarily as a supporting role until recently, appearing when needed but never taking center stage. It all changed with Disney + and Marvel’s other original streaming series, The falcon and the winter soldier. After Steve Rogers, Caps shield passes down to Sam at the end of Avengers: Endgame, the former soldier had a hard time struggling with the idea that a black man should put on Captain America’s cloak. At the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s run, but Sam had the iconic shield to stop the Flag Smashers attacks. Shortly after The falcon and the winter soldier ended, reports emerged that a Captain America 4 was officially under development, but Mackie had not been confirmed in the lead role in the film.

Now, Deadline reports that Mackie has closed a deal to star in his first solo MCU feature. Details are enclosed by the film, including its official title. It’s also unclear whether Sebastian Stan will repeat his role as Bucky Barnes in the film after working closely with Sam during their Disney + series. No director has been set for the film.

At the moment, it is unclear when Captain America 4 could release, but it’s no surprise Mackie has signed on to the film. The actor says he would play Captain American for 20 years if he could and Mackie’s passion for the character of Sam Wilson shows through his layered performances at MCU. Since the studio already has a packaged phase 4 slate, it looks like Captain America 4 could be far away. Still, it is clear that even without Steve Rogers, the shield will be as important to the MCU as ever.

Falcon and the Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman reportedly writes the script for Captain America 4 along with Dalan Musson, who also wrote for the series. This certainly indicates that Marvel wants to continue working on the timely themes that appear in the Disney + series, but how Captain America 4 will be part of the larger plot of MCU remains a mystery. Falcon and the Winter Soldier created plot threads that could be explored in both the sequel and the larger MCU, so Mackie’s return will be all the more anticipated for what it reveals about Marvel’s future.
