Urgent genomic testing is underway in New South Wales to determine if two overseas arrivals that tested positive for COVID-19 after landing in Sydney carry the new Omicron variant.

NSW Health confirmed this morning that tests on arrival at the airport showed that two of the passengers had coronavirus.
Urgent genomic sequencing is performed to determine if they are infected with the new Omicron B.1.1.529 variant.
Passengers with COVID-19 were taken to a special health facility where they will begin a 14-day quarantine.
“Other passengers on the flight may be considered a close contact and will be contacted and asked to be tested immediately and isolate themselves for 14 days in accordance with a public health order,” the NSW Health statement said.
“In accordance with Commonwealth measures, all travelers arriving in NSW who have been to South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, Malawi and the Seychelles must be in hotel quarantine within 14 days of their arrival in NSW. for 14 days, regardless of their vaccination status.
“All travelers who have been to any other overseas country within 14 days prior to their arrival in NSW must travel directly to their place of residence or accommodation and isolate themselves for 72 hours pending further health advice.”
Anyone who has already arrived in NSW, who has been to one of the nine African countries within the previous 14 days, must be immediately tested and isolated for 14 days.
