The mission of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) is to support the readiness of America’s Warfighter
and the health and well-being of the military community by educating and developing uniformed health professionals, scientists, and leaders;
by conducting cutting-edge, military-relevant research, and by providing operational support to units around the world. USU is authorized to
grant appropriate advanced academic degrees and has established postdoctoral, postgraduate, and technological institutes. Programs in
continuing education for military members of the health professions have been established so that the highest standards of health care may
be maintained within the military medical departments. USU must be responsive to the overall educational needs of the Military Departments
relating specifically to the preparation of individuals for careers in the health professions. USU is developing programs designed for
maximum utilization of faculty, facilities, and equipment available within military medical departments worldwide.

This position is
located at the USU Daniel K Inouye Graduate School of Nursing (GSN), in Bethesda, Maryland. The primary purpose of this position is to help
ensure that GSN students are provided with appropriate resources, advising and advocacy to optimize their well-being during their time in
the program. This will entail: understanding USU student life, USU faculty and student dynamics, programmatic and career path requirements,
identifying students’ underlying needs, and effectively implementing strategies to enable student wellness and success.

MAJOR DUTIES

The incumbent serves as the primary graduate student resource specialist supporting the GSN. They
will be responsible for all aspects of student wellness, career advocacy, and promotion of career development. Collaborating with the GSN
Commandant on military specific issues, the appointee will serve as a key resource for students in the GSN. 

The Assistant Dean
for Student Affairs serves as an ombudsman for graduate students, striving to identify student wellness and advocacy needs and to
appropriately support students in these areas. The incumbent will maintain confidentiality, working independently when required but largely
in coordination with the Dean, the Assistant Deans and other stakeholders (e.g. Student Health Center, USU Office of Inspector General, USU
EEO Officer and Office of General Counsel, School of Medicine Student Affairs Deans and the GSN Commandant) to ensure that student needs are
respected and appropriately met.

Duties of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs include but are not limited
to:

  • Serves as a resource and advocate for graduate students to seek out when facing challenges related to health,
    wellness, personal crisis, harassment, discrimination, interpersonal difficulties, and other relevant student issues.
  • Leads
    student outreach efforts to identify student challenges in health, wellness, personal crisis, harassment, discrimination, interpersonal
    difficulties, and other relevant student issues.
  • Creates resources and programs for students, faculty, and staff to facilitate
    development of skills in learning, communication and interpersonal interaction.
  • Works with faculty members in the GSN,
    collaborates with the Assistant Dean for Faculty Affairs to teach faculty development programs on student advising, feedback, advocacy,
    communication and other skills helpful to interdisciplinary health professions education. 
  • Works in concert with other
    faculty members, contribute to evolving scholarship as it pertains to health professions education and student and faculty wellness.
  • Serves on the GSN Leadership Team and Cabinet to participate in the strategic and operational management of the GSN; and works
    collaboratively with faculty and staff, to enhance diversity, inclusion and equity throughout the GSN and University.
  • Works
    closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the GSN to develop strategies to enhance the overall student experience and to
    assist students with any difficulties that arise during their graduate education careers. Provides informed recommendations to GSN
    stakeholders regarding student and faculty well-being.
  • Assesses and evaluates GSN student data on attrition to identify trends and
    recommend improvement strategies.
  • Assess perceived or actual barriers to student learning and/or test taking and determine when
    referral of individuals for formal assessment is warranted. Work with faculty mentors to craft academic interventions for remediation.
    Propose policy/procedure changes to foster retention, advancement and degree attainment. 
  • Participates in teaching relevant
    Graduate School of Nursing educational programs, workshops and short courses that support the above mentioned duties at USU, and serves on
    committees and work groups in the GSN and USU as appropriate.
  • Maintains professional contacts with counterparts at USU and in
    other graduate programs in nursing and medical schools and professional organizations throughout the country in order to identify, locate,
    and exchange information of mutual benefit.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY
CONTROLS

The incumbent primarily works under the direction of the Dean, Graduate School of Nursing.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent must possess at a minimum a Master’s degree in the fields of clinical
psychology, school psychology, social work, or counseling psychology from an accredited university or institution.

This position
requires: substantial experience and knowledge of graduate education; ability to think creatively and work collaboratively with
administration, faculty, staff, and students; excellent organizational and record-keeping skills, as well as strong interpersonal,
communication (written and oral), mentoring/coaching, and clinical skills. The incumbent must be committed to working with a diverse
population, have an energetic approach to student services, and an excellent understanding of programmatic evaluation.

The following
experience, knowledge, and/or credentials are highly desirable: a Ph.D. degree and 5 years of relevant work experience in the fields of
clinical psychology, social work, educational psychology, counseling psychology, or related fields in graduate education are strongly
encouraged to apply; military service as a member of a health profession to include health care administration in the military; experience
working with graduate students and/or graduate nursing students; experience in an advocacy or ombudsman role at an undergraduate or graduate
institution; experience working closely with institution leadership to promote overall student wellness.

OTHER POSITION
FACTORS

Assignment as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is an administrator assignment and is without tenure. The
initial appointment as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will be for a term of up to five (5) years and may be renewed with no limit on the
number of renewals. The assignment as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs is not a continuous appointment and as such the incumbent serves at
the pleasure of his or her immediate supervisor(s) and may be relieved as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs at any time.

The
incumbent of this position may also hold a USU faculty appointment in the GSN at the Assistant Professor level or higher in the
tenure-ineligible track in an appropriate nursing specialty based on his/her qualifications. As a faculty member, the incumbent will be
expected to perform responsibilities such as teaching, research, and/or other scholarly activities as required.

The incumbent
must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the specified academic rank in accordance with GSN and USU academic
policies.

Nominees for this position shall be required to successfully complete a security background investigation. Failure to
meet the background investigation requirements will result in the withdrawal of the position offer or removal from the position.

Relocation expenses i.e. PCS or relocation incentives as described on 5 U.S.C 5733 may be authorized in accordance with applicable travel
regulations, command policy and available command funding.
