University Unions is a department within Student Life which offers services, programs, spaces and student involvement opportunities through its three student unions (Michigan Union, Michigan League, Pierpont Commons), the Center for Campus Involvement, and an academic meeting and dining facility (Palmer Commons). Working in close partnership with Conference & Event Services and Michigan Dining, University Unions provides student-focused and customer-oriented service to the campus community. University Unions is a self-funded auxiliary enterprise with a total budget volume approximating $20 million and directly employs over 60 regular staff and 250 student staff.

Campus Information Summary:

Campus Information aims to make the University of Michigan feel like home. Serving as a starting point for those navigating U-M (students, staff, faculty, alumni, prospective students, and visitors), Campus Information shares accurate, personalized information and connects people to resources that will unlock all that the University of Michigan has to offer. Interacting with over 100,000 people annually, Campus Information serves the students and guests of the Unions in addition to the entire campus through in-person, phone, and online services. In addition, Campus Information manages the campus-wide map, campus events calendar, Happening@Michigan, and a number of resource navigation tools.

Job Summary

The University Unions Assistant Director leads the University of Michigan’s Campus Information service and provides unit-wide leadership for University Unions staff and student employee development initiatives. Campus Information operates from the Michigan Union, Michigan League, and Pierpont Commons and provides critical in-person welcome desk support in addition to managing the campus operator service, collecting and sharing information through a variety of channels including internet, phone, chat and email. This position is also responsible for special projects of UU-wide significance.

The Assistant Director reports to UU Associate Director/Director of the Michigan Union, and supervises two full-time staff and approximately 30 student employees. This position develops partnerships to ensure seamless information cultivation and multi-dimensional communication as well as developing and assessing meaningful student employee and staff experiences in UU, and is responsible for $400K in operating budgets. 


Leadership and Strategic Planning (30%)

  • Provide solution-oriented, innovative leadership to Campus Information, including the physical Info Desks, and phone/internet-based management of information for the U-M campus considering long term strategies to enhance information delivery.
  • Provide strategic leadership to student employee and staff development efforts for University Unions with an emphasis on providing positive employment experiences, developing and implementing plans that meet the needs of staff and that complement existing Student Life initiatives, including diversity, equity, and inclusion and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Partner with other Student Life units to improve the student employee experience.
  • Establish and maintain proactive collaborative relationships with University units to enhance services offered to students, faculty, staff, visitors, and alumni.

Management (30%)

  • In collaboration with Campus Information professional staff, provide strategic oversight for Happening at Michigan calendar, weekly Things to Do email, campus maps and other resources to benefit the UM campus community and guests.
  • Coordinate University Unions’ special projects, such as improving cross-functional collaboration in UU and advancing unit and divisional strategic objectives.
  • Oversee internal staff communication and information sharing efforts, including coordinating monthly all staff gatherings, maintaining the staff intranet, and other web-based tools.
  • In consultation with the Leadership Team, coordinate UU Management team meetings and retreats, including scheduling, content development, facilitation, and working with others to identify/present relevant topics.
  • Regularly assess UU and Campus Information initiatives for impact and effectiveness. Provide reports that effectively tell the story of the work.

Supervision (20%)

  • Supervise and develop a staff that is responsive to the diverse needs of the campus community, provide outstanding customer experience, foster empowerment with accountability, and is committed to the University Unions and Student Life mission.
  • Provide supervision to two full-time staff and indirectly supervise approximately 30 student employees.
  • Ensure operations are staffed appropriately given their operating hours outside of normal workdays.

Financial Responsibility (10%)

  • Develop, administer and reconcile departmental budgets, (approximately $400k), initiate corrective action when necessary.
  • Approve expenditures for materials and supplies.

Other (10%)

  • Serve on unit, division, and institutional committees.
  • Maintain appropriate usage statistics and reports for Campus Information and UU initiatives.
  • Assess and evaluate programs and services using data or Key Performance Indicators to make service improvements.

Required Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in higher education administration, human resources, information sciences or related discipline
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in higher education
  • Supervisory experience of both student and professional staff
  • Experience developing and implementing training, workshops, or curriculum
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with weekends, evenings and other hours as required
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

Working conditions

Physical requirements

  • The person in this position regularly travels to various locations on campus. Routinely moves boxes weighing up to 30 lbs.
