Assistant or Associate Professor of Studio Art


The Division of Arts and Humanities at Columbia College invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Studio
Art with
 a teaching focus in Graphic Design, beginning in August 2022. Columbia College is a
small liberal arts college that values the teacher/scholar model and is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion. Candidates should
demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence, the ability to foster collaborative relationships within the college
and their discipline, and the desire to contribute to a community that emphasizes service, social justice, and leadership development. The
Studio Art Program at Columbia College focuses on cultivating the technical abilities, aesthetic judgment, conceptual rigor, and love of
making that will sustain rewarding art and design practices over the long term. Majors earn a Bachelor of Arts degree within a broad liberal
arts context and focus on drawing, painting, graphic design, or photography. The program also serves many non-majors, who have the option of
minoring in either Studio Art or Art History. Facilities include a darkroom, a newly refurbished computer lab aimed at providing access to
industry-standard software and technology, and studios for painting, drawing, ceramics, and printmaking. In addition, the R. Wright Spears
Center for the Arts is home to the Goodall Gallery, which features student work as well as that of regional, national, and international
artists.

This position is a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track appointment. The standard teaching load is twelve
credit hours for each of the fall and spring semesters, including core courses and specialized courses in graphic design. The candidate will
demonstrate the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities, and is expected to
have flexibility in class scheduling to meet the needs of the college. Faculty members are expected to participate in faculty governance and
program activities and to engage in service, scholarship, and professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • An MFA or Ph.D. in Graphic Design or a related discipline in
    Studio Art by the time of appointment.
  • The demonstrated ability to teach Graphic Design across digital and print media in
    introductory through advanced undergraduate courses.
  • A significant record of professional achievement as a designer and/or artist,
    or in the case of recent graduates the demonstrated ability to develop such a record.

Preferred
Qualifications

  • At least two years of full-time undergraduate teaching experience.
  • The ability to teach in a
    secondary area of studio practice, such as photography, printmaking, 3D design, interactive design, or time-based practices.
  • An
    emphasis on social justice and/or diversity and inclusion in teaching and/or scholarship.
