Southern Illinois University School of Law seeks to hire an Assistant Professor (Head of
Public Services in the Law Library). This is a tenure track position in the School of Law Library.
The Assistant Professor (Head of
Public Services in the Law Library) assists the Law Library Director in various functions of library administration, including budget
preparation, long and short range planning, personnel supervision, and facilities management. The Assistant Professor (Head of Public
Services in the Law Library) is responsible for oversight of the Public Services department.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Closely assists the Law Library Director with library
administration, including budgeting, facilities planning, personnel management, and the development of policies and long-range plans;
coordinates interdepartmental activities; prepares statistical analyses and reports relating to Public Services aspects of the library
operation; performs or directs special projects as assigned by the Law Library Director.
OVERSIGHT: With respect to the Public Services department of the library, this person will oversee functions and activities of
this department and coordinate with Technical Services; oversee the development of general policies and procedures; supervise the library
staff within the Public Services Department, including but not limited to managing administrative procedures for hiring, arranging training
and orientation sessions for new employees, and coordinating evaluations.
INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES: This position
teaches in the Lawyering Skills program and, compatible with the interests and experience of the Assistant Professor (Head of Public
Services in the Law Library) and the needs of the School of Law, teaches other courses and programs offered to students in the School of
Law; provides instruction to School of Law students and faculty by conducting or participating in legal research lectures and specialized
topical research seminars; provides instruction in the use of the library and its materials to students enrolled in courses from other
University departments through orientation tours and direct individual assistance; and participates in the reference work of the Department
through direct patron assistance and related activities.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Compatible with the interests
and experience of the person in this position and the library’s needs, participates in the library’s collection development
program, including but not limited to review of new serial titles and subscription renewals; engages in original research and publishing as
described in the Law Library Promotion and Tenure Guidelines; serves the law school by participating in school wide activities, including
but not limited to service on standing or special committees as requested by the Dean; and serves the library and legal professions by
actively participating on the local, regional, or national level, including but not limited to service for associations, attendance at
professional conferences and continuing education programs, and delivering presentations at professional meetings.
