President Joe Biden on Friday signed a decree requesting the Department of Justice and other government agencies to review documents relating to the FBI’s 9/11 investigations into possible declassification – fulfillment of a campaign promise a few days before the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.
The bid’s order requires Attorney General Merrick Garland to release the declassified documents publicly over the next six months.
“We must never forget the persistent pain of families and loved ones of the 2,977 innocent people killed during the worst terrorist attack on America in our history,” Biden said in a statement Friday. “For them, it was not just a national and international tragedy. It was a personal destruction.”
