First look: The scarecrow’s plan for Gotham is taking shape

Dr. Jonathan Crane — Scarecrow — has caused the bat family to see some of the most frightening, unconscious sights while under the influence of his fear gas. He has brought the world’s strongest people to their knees while driving smaller minds clinically insane. And yet, in Batman: Fear State Alpha # 1, he does something that may be more frightening than anything else he has accomplished in his eighties.

He collaborates with Simon Saint.

The powerful, influential mind behind Gotham’s recently liberated team of genetically modified law enforcers – the Peacekeepers – is a fan of Crane’s work and a believer in one of his more provocative theories of fear and cultural development. And with St. pushing its citizens into a new phase of implementation.

Or those who do not die in the process at least.

Written by Batman author James Tynion IV and drawn by The last of God Riccardo Federici, Batman: Fear State Alpha ignites a blockbuster new comic book event that spans almost all of the Bat titles over the rest of the year. Hinted in DC Future State, Infinite Frontier # 0 and Tynion’s latest Batman storyline “Fear State” will shape Gotham’s direction in the years to come, while serving as the climax of Tynion’s time writing Dark Knight.

How could something so frightening happen under Batman’s watch? That’s a good question — one that the bat family is likely to ask themselves. But you can get a feel for it by checking out our exclusive first look at this new read cartoon.
