Will the University of Houston join the Big 12? That’s how fans think about it

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – College football fans dressed in match day attire packed the parking lots at NRG Stadium on Saturday night when the University of Houston hosted Texas Tech.

It was a meeting between old Southwest Conference rivals that could turn into an annual game if the Coogs join the Big 12.

“With COVID, I assume there has been a long wait for two years,” said one UH fan. “We have all been waiting for this moment.”

For many, it’s more than a game. It is a family tradition.

“My dad went here. So did my two brothers. I went to school here,” the flag said.

Leslie Landrum brought her family to the game in honor of her father, who was UH alum.

“He died eight years ago, so a good day to celebrate him,” Landrum said.

A major topic of conversation among tailgaters was the possibility of UH participating in the Big 12 conference.

Fans said the Coogs are ready to be part of a more competitive conference.

“We have a team that can take the challenge and put Houston on the map,” one fan said.

And it’s not just UH fans who support. Texas Tech fans are also on board.

“I think that would be a great addition,” said one Tech fan. “It would be great to have the old camaraderie of the old Southwestern conference here.”

A vote among the conference’s 10 members is required to approve graduate schools. The 12 major presidents are expected to meet next week.
