‘At first I thought,’ It’s A Hoax ”: Duck registered and said ‘You Bloody Fool’

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck and says what sounds like “your bloody fool”, then it’s probably an Australian muskrat named Ripper.

The waterfowl is believed to have learned the phrase – which may also sound like “your bloody food” – from a caretaker who hand-raised him in captivity at the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve near Canberra in the late 1980s, according to new research.

Ripper also mimicked a door slamming in sound originally recorded by birder Peter J. Fullagar in July 1987. The sounds were recently revived by a scientist Carel ten Cate from Leiden University in the Netherlands as part of his study of the bird’s vocal learning.

According to ten Cate’s profile on his the university’s website, he was looking at vocal learning as he stumbled upon an “obscure reference” to Ripper.

“When I first read it, I thought, ‘this is a hoax, it can not be true.’ But it turned out to be true, “he said per The guardian.
