Derek Hough admits he ‘faked it’ during the early ‘DWTS’ seasons

Holding back? Derek Hough reflected on his time as one Dance with the stars pro and revealed how his previous seasons differed from the rest.

“I definitely look back on my approach to the show. In my previous seasons, I was nervous and I was insecure, ”the 36-year-old star said on Sunday, September 5, in the episode of the“ Whine Down ”podcast. “I was kind of falsifying it, to be honest with you. I was not really a teacher or choreographer.”

The native of Utah – who competed as a pro 17 times, starting with season 5 in 2007 and ending with season 23 in 2016 – explained that people’s perception of him as an experienced choreographer when he did not feel like a “scared me and scared ”Of his role in the show.

“I would definitely be more easily frustrated in my previous seasons. I look back on some of my previous seasons and think, ‘Man, I wish I knew then what I know now,’ ”Hough continued. “I could probably have gotten more out of them with a better teaching approach, which I eventually learned and created. I wish I was better earlier and I could have given them a better chance and experience. ”

The six-time mirrorball champion became a judge in the longtime dance series for season 29 in 2020 and stepped up Len Goodman amid travel restrictions between the UK and the US during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s definitely a lot easier, it’s definitely. Dancing is harder, of course. I was on the show for 17 seasons [all] to [hard work]. There are all different experiences, triumphs and failures and all the things I could possibly have thought of, ”said Hairspray Live! star told podcast host Jana Kramer. “I want to say that it is much harder – when I judged further The world of dance it became pretapet [which is easier].
