After 34 years, a murder verdict quietly turned around in four minutes

James Allen, 71, had barely reached the courtroom, walking slowly with his black-sneakered feet chained by a chain when Cook County Circuit Court Judge Sophia Atcherson reversed her conviction for the 1984 murder of Robert Ciralsky.

Allen had waited 13 years for Wednesday’s hearing. In the end, it lasted only four minutes.
