Teen Wolf: Why Stiles Was Barely In Season 6

Fans were looking forward to seeing more of Stiles and Scott in Teen Wolf’s last season, but unfortunately Dylan O’Brien was barely in it – why?

Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) was barely there Teen Wolf‘season 6, which made some viewers wonder why the fan-favorite character was absent last season. The MTV teen horror drama, based on the original 1985 film starring Michael J. Fox, played for six years before ending. Many fans were surprised by the series’ ending, as there was no prior indication that the ending was on its way to the series, and the creators showed no indication that they might have sought to end the story of the Beacon Hills gang. Even though the show ended, fans and longtime viewers were still excited about what was to come in the future for the main characters, especially the two leaders of the show Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and Stiles Stilinski.

While Scott’s character was Teen Wolf’s titular character, Stiles was just as important to the narrative of the show. As the son of Sheriff Noah Stilinski (Linden Ashby), O’Brien’s character was the more pricey and adventurous of the two friends, and his curious nature often resulted in a number of unforeseen circumstances that played an important role in the action. In Teen Wolf Season 1, Stiles decided to seek out a dead body in the woods for no other reason than he thought it would be funny, leading to Scott being bitten by a werewolf – effectively making him have supernatural abilities. Stile’s sense of responsibility and loyalty to his best friend meant he would stay by Scott’s side and fight other supernatural beings and protect the city of Beacon Hills.

Unlike Scott, Stiles never got any super-abilities; despite this, he was an indispensable member of their growing herd. As the son of a skilled police officer, he had a penchant for cracking codes and tracking tracks that helped “teen wolf” Scott and the team in their endeavors. So it was disappointing for many fans as the character was barely involved Teen Wolf season 6 as it was their last chance to see him and Scott go together on their final hurray.

Why Dylan O’Brien Left Teen Wolf

However, this was not intentional and if it was up to Teen Wolfs producers and writers, not to mention O’Brien, Stiles would have played a much bigger role in the show’s farewell season. They were forced to use the character in a limited way due to a few reasons. First, there was a planning conflict between the show and Maze Runner: The Death Cure as O’Brien played the main character, Thomas. This is why Stiles did not appear in every episode of Teen Wolf season 6’s first 10 episodes – the first time this happened since the show premiered. Things only got worse for the last half of the series when O’Brien was eventually involved in a stunt accident during the filming of the same movie in March 2016. As it turns out, O’Brien’s injuries were more serious than originally perceived – so much so that the production until the Fox movie was shut down for a while. This, of course, made it more difficult to bring Stiles in regularly Teen Wolf season 6B. In fact, O’Brien revealed in an interview with Busyness that he was not contractually obliged to appear in the remaining episodes of the show.

Finally, Teen Wolf was able to pull off a satisfying finale for the Beacon Hills gang. Not only did they find a way to bring Stiles back into the final 10 episodes that took place after a time jump, but it also allowed them to re-incorporate Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin) into the story. Given that this was not the ideal scenario, as fans would have liked to see Stiles more involved in the action with Scott, the show was able to get the best out of the predicament they were in. There may still be an opportunity for fans of the series to see Dylan O’Brien back in his role as Stiles in Teen Wolf revival film confirmed to be in production for Paramount + with Tyler Posey back and no other confirmed casting announcements.
