Jesy Nelson deals with accusations of ‘blackfishing’: ‘I would never do anything on purpose’

Jesy Nelson dealt with accusations that she was “black fishing” in her latest music video during an Instagram Live on Monday.

The 30-year-old singer, who was previously part of Little Mix, was shot after social media users claimed Nelson had tanned her skin to look darker in an attempt to be seen as biracial in the music video for “Boyz “with Nicki Minaj.

“I would personally say that my intention was never to offend brightly with this video and my song, because as I said when I was growing up as a young girl, it’s the music I listened to,” Nelson said during his – down with Minaj.

“These are the videos that I saw and thought were the best,” she added. “For me personally, R&B from the ’90s was the best year in music. I just wanted to celebrate it. I just want to celebrate that musical age is what I love.”

Nelson said it “really hurt” her to know she had offended people.

“My intent has never, ever ever wanted to offend anyone, and it really hurts me that may have offended people and actually just hurt people’s feelings just by really celebrating something I love,” Nelson added.

During Instagram Live, Nelson also claimed that she gets naturally brown in the sun.

“I’m just really lucky as a white girl that when I’m in the sun I burn myself as dark as so many people have said to me before as Leigh-Anne [Pinnock] in the group has said: ‘You are sure you are not a mixed race because you have become darker than me in the sun. It’s crazy, “Nelson claimed, referring to her former bandmate from Little Mix. I would also come on this Live today and show everyone that my hair is naturally curly. I have always had curly hair. I got it from my dad. “

Nelson stressed that she was not “consciously” “racially ambiguous” in a statement previously made to Vulture.

“I take all the comments made seriously,” the singer told the outlet. “I never wanted to do anything on purpose to make myself look racist, so I was initially shocked that the expression was aimed at me.”

Before going solo with “Boyz”, Nelson was a member of Little Mix, an all-girls group that had won “X-Factor” in the UK.
