Job Summary
Under the general direction of the Teacher, prepares materials for the classroom, ensures safety of students and staff, assists with meal service, and helps implement developmentally appropriate curriculum. Guides and directs volunteers and children.

Position Specific Duties

  1. Assists in the planning and implementing of a developmentally appropriate classroom environment and curriculum.
  2. Assists in the implementation of the program’s policies and procedures and Positive Behavior Supports in facilitating social and emotional development of children.
  3. Encourages experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice making; asks open-ended questions and listens respectfully to children.
  4. Assumes responsibility for the classroom in the absence of the teacher.
  5. Completes observations documenting children’s strengths and areas for growth.
  6. Assists Teacher in maintaining accurate written records, including ongoing assessments, anecdotal observations of children and other required forms.
  7. Prepares and maintains classroom materials and a clean environment.
  8. Assists with meal services and meal reports.
  9. Assists with the implementation of parent involvement plans including evening parent services as assigned.
  10. Supports implementation of an individual education plan for each child.

General Duties

  1. Reports suspected child abuse in accordance with Oregon Statute and Head Start procedures.
  2. Attends training sessions and participates in training opportunities.
  3. Promotes and encourages parent involvement.
  4. Works as a team with community agencies and other staff in providing services to children and families.
  5. Maintains the confidentiality of highly sensitive information.
  6. Interacts with children, families and community members in a supportive and professional manner.
  7. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Examples of Duties:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Step 3 or higher in the Oregon Registry and one of the following:
  • Preschool CDA Credential or the ability to obtain a CDA within two years of hire date: OR
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education/Child Development/Early Intervention or the ability to obtain within two years of hire date


  • One year of experience working with preschool-age children
  • Experience working with diverse backgrounds of the College’s community, students and employees; demonstrated commitment to promoting access and diversity
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on a daily basis

Desired Qualifications

  • Associates degree in Early Childhood Education
  • Bilingual skills: oral and written fluency in English with fluency also in Spanish, Russian or another language that meets community/department’s needs

Additional Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in the Oregon Central Background Registry prior to beginning employment and enrollment must be maintained throughout employment
  • Post-offer fitness for duty evaluation, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date:
    • TB screening
    • Health appraisal
  • Oregon food handler’s card, must be obtained within 30 days of hire date
  • Infant/child first aid/CPR, must be obtained within 60 days of hire date
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect within 30 days of hire
  • Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety within 30 days of hire
  • Prevention is Better than Treatment within 30 days of hire

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of child development and/or early childhood best practices
  • Knowledge of or ability to establish working relationships with staff
  • High performance through creativity, positive spirit, and multi-tasking
  • High personal integrity and sound professional ethics
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills

Works assigned schedule, and exhibits regular and predictable attendance. Work is sometimes performed in an emotional and stressful environment.
