North Carolina Middle School art assignment makes parents furious over sexual images

Sixth-graders at a school in North Carolina were asked to study a picture with a sexually explicit act as part of an art assignment, angry parents claim.

Following the riot, the principal of Kennedy Middle School in Charlotte promises to ensure that teachers only post controlled images and links on digital learning platforms for his students, according to the WSOC.

“I was made aware that there were some inappropriate artist images that were inadvertently included in a 6th grade art lesson while the teacher is on maternity leave,” Principal Kevin Sudimack said in a statement. “I worked with the art teacher to get the images removed from the CANVAS platform.”

The artwork awarded to the class, by Kara Walker, has the title "Gone: A historical romance about a civil war as it took place between One Young Negress' dark thighs and her heart." Walker is shown here in front of part of the piece where he attended the opening reception for the reinstallation of contemporary art from the collection at MOMA on June 29, 2010 in New York, City.

Parent Samantha Davis told the WSOC she was “shocked” to see the artwork as part of her daughter’s curriculum.

“I understand that the topic is appropriate for college and adults,” she said. “I can not find this artist and what she portrays as something age-appropriate for kids in middle school to see.”

“Just pulling it’s is nice, it’s great – but it should not have been there in the first place,” Davis added.

“This work is based on deliberate misreading of historical texts such as ‘Gone with the Wind’. I wanted to ensure that there would always be such a sense of guilt in money laundering or to wish away the inappropriate, ugly part of the story, of any story. , “Walker told the Museum of Modern Art. “But specifically, the story I want to talk about always comes back to an American mythology that involves race, slavery – a sadomasochistic construction that underlies the American storytelling.”
