After registering a bumper-opening weekend, all eyes were on Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif’s Sooryavanshi, who passed the tough litmus test on Monday, which is always a clear indication of where a movie is headed at the box office. Well, the good news is that the Rohit Shetty director has passed the Monday test with flying colors, and has given an extremely strong team and ensured that the euphoria experienced in the industry, trade and media over Sooryavanshi’s fantastic weekend collections was not short-lived. It’s now almost certain that the film, which also sees extended cameos by Ajay Devgn as Singham and Ranveer Singh as Simmba, should be a pure hit at least, if not more.
See Sooryavanshi’s daily box collection below:
Day 1: 26.29 INR
Day 2: 23.85 INR
Day 3: 26.94 INR
Day 4: 13.68 INR
Total: 90.76 INR net
(₹ 130-135cr at normal times)
Almost everyone, including probably the creators, would not have expected this kind of dominance from Sooryavanshi, especially after theaters were returning to normalcy after ages and had just reopened in Maharashtra and Kerala. What this has done has silenced the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ brigade and the ‘SSR Warriors’ team as well as those spreading false news that the industry has seeped into drugs, while exceeding the most enthusiastic expectations from industry, trade and media.
Not even the COVID-19 threat still threatens to any degree; 50% occupancy in Maharashtra and Kerala; Shows not decided until the last minute could dampen the juggernaut that Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead role, directed by Rohit Shetty, have become. Sooryavanshi needs a minimum of Rs. 200 crore net to be declared a pure hit of the trade, which it should achieve. It would be a super hit for Rs. 220 crore net, and a blockbuster of Rs. 240 crore net, both of which are also well within reach.
