Sarah Lawrence College in partnership with the Hudson River Museum invites applications for a Public
Humanities Fellow starting no later than January 2022. This three-year, full-time fellowship is funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon
The position will be integral to the interpretive work at the Hudson River Museum and also extend curricular and pedagogical
innovation for the college in the areas of museum/curatorial studies, visual cultures, and/or Latino/a/x and Latin American
At the Museum, the Public Humanities Fellow will pursue a curatorial and educational project focused on developing the
Museum’s history collections and relationships to artists to reflect the rich diversity of people’s lives in Yonkers, Westchester, and the
surrounding region. He/She/They will lead an initiative consisting of reaching out to the local Latino/a/x communitiesfully recognizing the
intersectionality that existsto gather images, objects, and media for possible archival, collection, loans, and/or exhibition purposes. The
Fellow will also participate on a museum-wide team to reinterpret the collection galleries. The position is supported and mentored by
senior leadership and integrated with the entire staff.
This local history initiative will build upon the HRM’s successful Through
Our Eyes: Milestones and Memories of African Americans in Yonkers collection and exhibition project to extend outreach to these additional
groups whose representation, in art and histories have been historically underrepresented in the Museum’s collections and narratives. This
process will intentionally build stronger, and sustainable, relationships with these communities.
The Public Humanities Fellow will
be integral to the team that develops the new collection galleries because the overarching goal is to integrate local history, including
narratives gathered by the Fellow, while also highlighting the Museum’s significant American art collection. Input from the Fellow on
creative ways to combine all these assets for innovative, relatable, and effective storytelling, integrating interpretive elements that
reflect the spirit and criteria of the collecting initiative, will be a key element of the success of this major effort.
Humanities Fellow will share the Museum’s commitments to engage, inspire, and connect diverse communities through the power of the arts,
sciences, and history and to invite new and multiple generations to participate in creating and sharing vital cultural materials. This work
involves outreach, research, writing, and programming, with the goal of creating a range of content that is accessible and relatable to the
public across a variety of platforms from the Museum’s collection displays to programming for the public and for schools. Genuine interest
in helping the public feel welcome and a desire to demystify the museum experience are a must, as is strong proficiency in spoken and
At the College, the Public Humanities Fellow will teach courses that will engage our students in their work at the
Museum. While the Fellow’s area of specialty is open, we envision courses based in museum/curatorial studies, visual cultures, and/or
Latino/a/x studies that will involve our students in current conversations around historically marginalized voices and perspectives, as
well as the ways that museums establish and maintain interrelationships with local communities. We anticipate that course work will include
opportunities for students to bridge theory and practice by including community-based work with both the Hudson River Museum and the local
