Full-time appointment in the Animation Department. The Maryland Institute College of Art invites
applications for this full-time faculty position with a multi-year renewable contract in a non-tenure institution beginning Fall 2022.
MICA’s Animation Department is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program, committed to helping students find their personal creative voice
while preparing for professional careers as leaders and innovators in arts and industry. As the department grows, we are seeking new faculty
members who can collectively add to our program’s diverse strengths.

Job Description:

We are seeking
candidates who possess both fundamental and interdisciplinary skills in 2D animation. The successful candidate will show a command of
traditional animation techniques and will teach 2D animation and pre-production coursework (storyboarding, 2D character performance,
principles of animation) and senior thesis. They should also possess a knowledge of Tradigital workflows that will support and diversify our
collaborative, project-centered curriculum. MICA’s Animation program provides real world experience to our students by leveraging
Baltimore’s unique pool of opportunities within the fields of medicine, technology, science, astronomy, music, game design, and
independent animation.

We are specifically interested in candidates who can speak to multiple intersections of diversity, equity and
inclusion. The successful candidate will engage with processes and workflows that reflect a transnational cultural exchange. The successful
candidate will work to develop our growing curriculum as well as help form relationships with local community partners and engage in
innovative modes of instruction.

Full-time faculty will teach 18 credits (three courses per semester) at an art school
nationally known for its dedication to teaching excellence in the fine arts paired with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. The
interdisciplinary nature of the Department and College requires that faculty maintain an active professional practice. Our faculty must
meaningfully contribute to all aspects of departmental and institutional operation, committee service and governance. In addition to
teaching, all full-time faculty are expected to pursue research and/or professional engagements that contribute to the educational mission
of the department and college.

Full-time faculty are expected to:

  • Enhance collaboration with other communities both
    within and expanded beyond the MICA community (especially within the Animation field and other higher learning institutions)
  • Promote a strong, student-centered agenda based in civic engagement
  • Navigate national and/or international trends in Animation
    education, theory and practice
  • Promote student employment upon graduation
  • Uphold MICA’s Mission, Vision, and Tenets


  • Terminal degree: MFA or its equivalent in Animation or a related field, or 5 years of
    professional experience
  • Professional Production experience in Animation, Film/Video or related specialties
  • Prior teaching
    experience at the college level
  • Demonstrated Preproduction skill set
  • Digital Cinematography &
  • A knowledge of Animation History and Film/Animation Studies
  • Off-screen Applications such as Installation and
  • Tradigital techniques and applications (Toon Boon and TV Paint preferred) and workflow pipeline(s)
  • Personal
    commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level using pedagogical approaches that are relevant and responsive to a student body that is
    rich in diversity across race, ethnicity, gender, and class and their intersections
  • Promised or proven ability to teach across
    multiple levels, from introductory to advanced independent work
  • The ability to communicate skillfully within a diverse range of
    community members
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment, participating in advising, institutional/departmental service,
    events and student activities
  • An active creative practice with a significant record of exhibition and/or production
  • A
    personal artistic vision that is reflected in the candidate’s teaching philosophy

Valued, but not

  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience at the college-level beyond graduate assistantships is
  • Mentorship experience related to the realization and installation of long term student projects related to moving
  • Organizational leadership experience
  • A demonstrated ability to model and teach effective collaboration skills
  • Experience that is informed by multiple worldviews
  • Experience teaching non-Western animation forms and history
  • International experience in animation production and/or education

About The Animation Department:

MICA’s Animation
department is a growing program, which currently serves over 177 majors, and many non-majors from Illustration, Game Design, Interactive
Arts, Film and Video, and among others.

Our curriculum focuses on collaborative project-based courses, supported by a diverse
offering of technical electives in CG, Stop Motion, and 2D animation. Emphasizing concept and critical inquiry, students are encouraged to
take risks while developing a personal artistic voice and forging leadership positions in the animation field. MICA Animation values
innovative approaches to the medium and promotes experimentation over specialization.

Our students have access to Mac and PC computer
labs, a 12-bay stop-motion studio with auxiliary workspace, a dedicated render farm, a two-way recording booth and foley studio, a large
production studio with a green screen cyc and grid, equipment checkout, and an editing suite. In addition, MICA students have access to
fabrication labs equipped with 3D printers, CNC machines, laser cutters and traditional woodworking equipment.
