When Donald Trump appeared at a recent gathering of Republican senators and party donors, he raised a case that did not immediately seem relevant to the topic of their meeting.
They had turned up at a grand hotel on Palm Beach to hear lectures on digital fundraising and the pressure to win the Senate back next year.
But Trump spoke to them about a wild claim made five years ago, in a collection of reports by former British spy Christopher Steele, that he had hired sex workers to pee on the bed of a hotel suite in Moscow, where Barack and Michelle Obama had once spent the night.
