Mel Gibson will direct and star in “Lethal Weapon 5”.

Speaking at an Experience With event in London, UK, the actor confirmed he will take over after director Richard Donner died on 5 July.

Gibson shared according to the independent: “The man who directed all the ‘Lethal’ movies, Richard Donner, he was a great guy.

‘He was developing the script and he got pretty far with it. And he said to me one day, ‘Listen kid, if I kick in the bucket, you do.’ And I said, ‘Shut up.’

“But he actually died. But he asked me to do it, and at that point I did not say anything.

“He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I have to direct the fifth,” the star continued.

Insiders also said Gibson would repeat his role as Martin Riggs in the upcoming film, the sun reported.

A source said: “In addition to stepping up to direct ‘Lethal Weapon 5’, Mel will be starring in it.

“Fans of Riggs will be happy to see him back on screen – older, but not necessarily smarter.

“It is hoped that Danny Glover will also return and resume his role as Roger Murtaugh.”
