Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa praises Kiernan Shipka’s long-awaited performance as Sabrina and says the crossover episode is fantastic.
Riverdale‘s showrunner has praised the long-awaited crossover episode with Sabrina’s exciting adventure, says that it is “amazing.” Beginning with a seven-year leap into the future, Riverdale season 5 saw several marked shifts in its finale. Tensions between Archie (KJ Apa) and Hiram (Mark Consuelos) reached a boiling point when Hiram planted a bomb in Archie’s home in hopes of getting rid of his longtime enemy. Although both Archie and Betty survive, as does the trailer Riverdale season 6 makes it clear that Hiram’s last night of revenge has to have a lasting effect on those closest to him.
Along with its trademark relationship drama and a possible pregnancy for Betty (Lili Reinhart), the trailer ended with the unveiling of Kiernan Shipka, who repeated her role as Sabrina Spellman from Netflix’s Sabrina’s exciting adventure. A smiling Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch) turns to Sabrina and jokes with the witch about “what the black cat dragged in.” Sabrina then turns to Cheryl and shows her own big smile. The teasing led to lots of fan speculation considering how Sabrina’s exciting adventure series concluded, and how long viewers have wanted Shipka to perform on Riverdale. Of course, it left viewers curious to know more about how the crossover goes.
To promote Riverdale season 6, which premieres on The CW with a five-episode event on Tuesday, November 16, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke with TVLine. Aguirre-Sacasa shed light on the future Riverdale event, and explained its horror effects, which will vary depending on the episode. As it was related to Sabrinas Riverdale debut, the showrunner said the crossover will happen during episode 4. Aguirre-Sacasa also had much praise for the chemistry between Shipka and Petsch. Read his quote below.
“The episode she’s in is amazing … It’s a very Cheryl / Madelaine [Petsch]-tung episode. They had such an amazing relationship and it felt so natural … It felt like both [it was] worth the wait, and “Why did we not do it before?”
This has long been noted Riverdale and Sabrina’s exciting adventure exists in the same universe, along with the short-lived spinoff Katy Keene. In the past, all three shows have included references to each other, with minor and minor characters appearing in cameos and small guest roles. Still, despite Aguirre-Sacasa always noticing his openness to a full-fledged crossover (even planning a story called “The Witch’s War” at some point), Shipka falls into Riverdale many seasons after the teenage drama established itself.
There are still questions about how Shipka’s character will come into play Riverdale season 6. Theories have suggested that the use of aliens could pave the way for Sabrina to show up. Others have argued that her involvement could be facilitated more simply by relying on already established magic lore. It remains to be seen which path the writers decide to take and whether Shipka will eventually make more recurring appearances, but fans will not have to wait much longer to find out.
