It’s quiet inside Fate 2 at the moment, but big changes are just around the corner. Last week, Bungie outlined major balance changes coming to arms next month. Today it revealed it complete overhaul of how capability cooling works. Fate 2 is going to feel like a very different game when the 30th anniversary package goes live on December 7th.
More if you have been playing the game with any sense of regularity over the last year. While some of the upcoming changes may be background noise for newer Guardians, the recurring ones may find their world upside down. This is because Bungie announced that from next month, each capability will have a unique cooling set according to how powerful it is.
Currently, each category of subclass power has the same cooling hours. Warlock Solar grenades are the same as Hunter Flux grenades, and Titan’s Fist of Havoc super takes as long to look up as Warlock’s Well of Radiance. Going forward, each will be calibrated independently, as you would expect if you were playing a traditional MMORPG. This shift will fit with subclass trees that get reworked Stasis Aspect / Fragment when The Witch Queen the expansion hits in February, but in the meantime, it’s going to change how people play, especially in PVP.
“We’ve called this the Variable Ability Cooldowns system, and we think it’s the beginning of a big change for Fate 2 sandbox, ”Bungie wrote in today’s blog post. “It’s a fundamental change in preparation to move the Light subclasses over to the Subclass 3.0 system that Stasis is currently using.”

Here are just a few of the specific changes that are coming:
- Slower cooling in PVP and PVE
- Significantly more ability to regenerate from weapon damage
- Fewer but more powerful grenades in PVE
- Super cooldown tier with Well of Radiance the fastest and Hammer of Sol the slowest
- Changes in the ability to regenerate current Exotics and Armor Mods
- Lots of abilities get nervous, including Hunter’s Dodge, Titan’s Shoulder Charge and Warlock’s Handheld Supernova.
Paired with major changes in the arms balance are coming, the idea is that players should rely more on their unique arsenals of weapons and less on spam capabilities. There are a lot of detailed notes in the post of over 5,000 words, but great image players will completely recalibrate many of the character buildings they have come to love and trust the site beyond the light launched last year. Hunters are already preparing funerals for their Dodge loads with maximum mobility. We’ll get a better idea of whether it’s best when the changes actually take effect in December.
