Huawei GT Runner will give you serious Smartwatch envy

Huawei’s GT Runner puts professional fitness technology into a smart ride that looks like a sports car. However, it will not be as cheap as its predecessors.

Huawei‘s GT Runner is a smartwatch that combines professional fitness monitoring technology with the sleek style of a sports car. It offers several upgrades compared to its predecessor, but also comes with a higher price tag at the same time. Despite being primarily known for its smartphones, Huawei’s improved range of smartwatches has certainly kicked off the competition lately.

In particular, the Huawei Watch GT 2 came with enough pizzazz to accommodate Apple’s and Samsung’s flagship laptops, even with a variant designed in collaboration with Porsche Design, the company behind the iconic Porsche 911 sports car. It offered lots of premium features such as blood oxygen (SpO2) tracker, sleep monitoring, luxurious titanium exterior and two weeks battery life, to name a few. However, it was eventually followed by the Huawei Watch GT 3 back in October, which enhances most of its predecessor’s remarkable features, including a larger screen with higher resolution and better health monitoring software accuracy.

It looks like the Huawei Watch GT 3 will now also get an upgraded variant in the form of the new and improved GT Runner. Aside from having a more lightweight, athletic look, the Huawei Watch GT Runner basically inherits most of the GT 3’s features, though with better health tracking capabilities that are particularly suited to runners, according to Keep. This includes an improved “135% boost” in GPS accuracy for route tracking and an improved TruSport system, which provides more accurate health monitoring readings in the form of VO2 Max, training effect, running ability index and the like. Although not currently available outside of China, it will reportedly have a price tag of $ 400 if it were to be sold internationally.

Like Garmin’s rumored smartwatch, the Huawei Watch GT Runner is mostly aimed at sports-oriented fitness wearables other than flagship smartwatches. Instead of using the more powerful steel frames from the Garmin Venu 2 and the regular Watch GT 3, the GT Runner incorporates lighter materials, such as a polymer housing and ceramic edge, all the while still having a more robust titanium crown. This makes it a better option for runners who literally do not want to be burdened by their smartwatch.

Its featured sports car-inspired styling also makes it easier to switch from athletic to a more casual style. Although the GT Runner has better accuracy when it comes to running-related software, the base Huawei Watch GT 3 still has most of its features, for around $ 85 less. Unlike other fitness smartwatches, it’s also worth noting that the GT Runner is powered by Huawei’s own HarmonyOS instead of Google’s Wear OS, so third-party support may not be as robust. Overall, having more skilled running-focused features and a longer-announced battery life gives the GT Runner an advantage for avid marathon runners over competitors like Garmin’s Venu 2, if consumers can get their fingers in it, ie.
