Review of: Russel D’Silva
Bunty Aur Babli may not have been one of Bollywood’s smartest, sexiest or most carefully planned robbery films in the style of e.g. Don 2, Dhoom 2, Special 26, Aankhen or Kaante, but it was definitely damn entertaining and had a simple charm to it that not only connected big time with the audience back then, but also kept the film popular over the years through several successful TV shows repetitions. Now, when a sequel arrives 16 years later, there will obviously be some fear of the elapsed time, and the creators and cast will be able to recreate your harmless fun in modern surroundings. Well, the good news is that Bunty Aud Babli 2, starring Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan, Siddhant Chaturvedi and debutant Sharvari, is a total hoot that matches its predecessor toe-to-toe for sheet entertainment.
So are you excited about what to see this weekend, or what to see this week, and wondering if Bunty Aur Babli 2 is worth your time? Scroll down for my full review of Bunty Aur Babli 2 …
What is it about
While the old Bunty Aur Babli, Vimmi (Rani Mukerji) and Rakesh Trivedi (Saif Ali Khan) have settled into an honest life at home, with a child and others, their past catches up with them as two new scammers, too pretending to be Bunty Aur Babli (Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari) begins to draw disadvantages with the same MO, albeit using modern technology, leaving the brand’s signature at the end. Since the police have no idea about the identity of the looters, it is after suspicion of the old B&B up to the old professionals to jump back into action and undertake to capture their clones.

What’s hot
The contributions themselves set the electric tone from the start – ranging from Siddhant Chaturvedi and Sharvari being presented as Bunty Aur Babli 2.0 to Rani Mukerji and Saif Ali Khan being reintroduced in their worn Bunty Aur Babli avatars to Pankaj Tripathi crossing onto the railway tracks, the very beginning of all the characters in Bunty Aur Babli 2 screams heroism and mass moments. Plus, the cons are planned as elaborately and entertainingly as the first part. And like the first part, YRF has shown its wisdom in casting exceptional actors like Yashpal Sharma, Asrani and Gopal Datt even in small parts, as well as being back some of the old gangs like Brijendra Kala and the legendary Prem Chopra. Most importantly, the plot is sharp, the editing is sharp, and the tempo is high; Director Varun V. Sharma gets a very confident feature film debut.
But for such bizarre stories to be compelling, the play must be on the money, and this is where the Bunty Aur Babli sequel shines most through, with Siddhant Chautrvedi as the ideal chameleon, Saif Ali Khan as the perfect middle-aged man, clinging to her past life, Sharvari gets a dream debut (presented as a real Yash Raj heroine, she could not have asked for more), Pankaj Tripathi is an ingenious alternative to Amitabh Bachchan’s police avatar, and above all Rani Mukerji proves once again, why she is an eternal star who will always rule our hearts. Fortunately, the creators have injected the same background score from the first film, and they know better than to tinker with it. The dialogues are another highlight.
What is not
One thing that Bunty Aur Babli 2 cannot shake off, as in the original, is the ridiculous undercurrent of some of the drawbacks. You really need to suspend infidels more than necessary to get into the disadvantages of how complicated and entertaining they can be. Even the relationship between the cops and the original Bunty Aur Babli is a little hard to digest, as is Siaf’s sudden metamorphosis from a half-middle-aged uncle to a smart and stylish middle-aged guy. Another major point of contention is the completely dull music that immediately ignites an urge for the evergreen songs from the first part. We also understand that the creators went for a light-hearted tone, and although it works for the most part, it would not have hurt to see a little hassle and uncertainty added to some of the disadvantages.
BL dom
From electrifying contributions to detailed cons, Bunty Aur Babli 2 is immensely entertaining and joyfully entertaining, though at times it pushes the boundaries of stupidity and disbelief. Saif Ali Khan is perfect as a guy in the midway crisis, Siddhant Chaturvedi is a chameleon, Sharvari makes a dream debut as the typical YRF heroine, but above all it is Rani Mukerji who steals the show once again, which reminds us all, why she will be the eternal star who will forever exclude hearts. This sequel lives up to the charm of the first part in more ways than one. I go with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
