That PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are large, and you will probably need to make room to place one of these consoles in your home theater or on your desk.

Fortunately, you have options: All PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X models – and the smaller Xbox Series S – can be placed vertically or horizontally. But that raises the question: is one way better than the other?

It does not matter if your console is vertical or horizontal?

Your console orientation will not affect performance or gameplay, but there is Pros and cons of placing your PS5 or Xbox Series X / S upright or on the side. In some cases, it helps to position your console vertically its fans to ventilate more efficiently and an upright positionn gives it a smaller footprint so it can fit in tight spaces.

Placing a console horizontally, however, gives it a lower center of gravity and wider footprint, reducing the risk of tipping over and making it the better option if you have limited space above the console.

That said, the “best” way to place your consoles is on a matter of preference. Whichever direction works best in your room and gives the console enough space, it will be the safest option. Games will play identically no matter which way the machine stands, and as long as it has proper ventilation, there is no risk of overheating – just, you know, do not turn it upside down by accident.

With that in mind, let’s quickly review how to properly position your PS5, Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S in either vertical or horizontal settings.

There are two versions of PlayStation 5: the standard model with the disk drive and the “digital” model without the disk drive. Both models work horizontally or vertically, and the setup is identical on each. I eiTheir orientation sits PS5 on the included detachable base.

For vertical use, the base slides into the widest end of the bracket and is secured with the supplied bottom screw. Given the large – and inconsistent – dimensions of the PS5, the vertical option is useful when you do not have much surface space on your desk or in your living room. Just make sure the PS5 is properly attached to the base, as the console is more likely to tip over if bumped when standing vertically.

Using the PS5 horizontally also works. That said, the PS5’s asymmetrical frame is misleading; there is no clear indication of which page should be at the top and the stand is connected to both sides of the frame (for some reason), it is easy to place the console upside down, which can damage the internal mechanisms. It’s so easily a mistake even official Sony ads are erroneously displayed the machine upside down.

To avoid setting up the console incorrectly, make sure that the disk slot is on the bottom of PS5s with disk drives. For models that are only digital, you will want the bulge side down.

Xbox Series X

Xbox series The X can be placed vertically or horizontally right out of the box, making it easier to set up than its PlayStation rival. Series X is most often placed vertically in most official Microsoft ads, as it is the most effective for ventilation. However, the horizontal position is also safe.

If you want to place the giant black box vertically, just make sure the rubberized feet are facing down and the large exhaust fan is facing up. Seen from the front, the Xbox logo light should be at the top left and the disc slot at the bottom left.

For horizontal orientation, make sure that the disk drive slot and the Xbox logo are facing out, and that the disk slot is on the top left and the Xbox light is on the top right. As with a misaligned PS5, using an Xbox Series X upside down can damage the electronic components inside, damage the drive disk, and put the console in danger of overheating.

Xbox Series S

Xbox Series S is even easier to set up than its larger sibling, and its design makes it clear which sides to place upward in both directions.

If you place the Series S vertically, make sure the side with the large black fan opening has the fan toward the top with the engraved Xbox logo near the bottom. The circular Xbox logo-shaped power light on the front of the console should be at the top left when viewed straight on.

When using the console horizontally, the large fan opening should face up and the Xbox-shaped power light will be at the top right.
