PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A 55-year-old woman was shot several times in the chest and killed in southern Philadelphia on Wednesday, police said. The shooting marks the 500th homicide in Philadelphia in 2021, tying 1990 to the deadliest year in the city’s history.

“This is a domestic incident. A man chased a 600-block woman off Jackson Street and shot him five times,” a police officer said.
This shooting marks a bleak milestone of 500 killings in Philadelphia this year. The city has not seen dizzying statistics like this since 1990.
“It’s a number. However, we can not just say, because it is the 500th, that it is more special than any of the 499 that went on. Each of them is a life, each is a person who had family who had friends and a life ahead of them that has been wiped out by gun violence, ”said a police officer.
Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw promised to seek justice for the victim’s families, saying that “every killing causes a deep sense of loss. But for our city to have reached such a tragic milestone – 500 lives shortened – it has a weight that is almost impossible to really understand. “
