How to develop Ponyta in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

Ponyta can evolve into Rapidash in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl when it reaches level 40, or players probably rarely give it candy.

Ponyta is a Fire-Type Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl that can evolve into Rapidash under the right conditions. Players will have to develop Ponyta if they want to acquire Rapidash, as Rapidash cannot be captured as a wild Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

To develop Ponyta in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players must first find and capture one. The first time you may encounter Ponyta in the wild is Route 211, located east of Eterna City. They can be found in the patches of grass at the foot of Mt. Coronet. Although this is the first time players may encounter Ponyta, they are quite rare in this place. As the players progress through the story Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and defeat Eterna City’s gym manager, Gardenia, they will have access to Route 206. Often referred to as the bike path, Route 206 is home to wild Ponyta, and here they will spawn more often than they do on Route 211.

Another place where players can find Ponyta Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is the grass along Route 210, which lies between Solaceon Town and Celestic Town in the Sinnoh region. They are quite common on the southern part of Route 210 in the afternoon hours. Ponyta can also be found along Route 214 and Route 215, where Route 215 is the last chance to catch a wild Ponyta as players leave Veilstone City.

Evolving Ponyta in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

A Rapidash follows the player character around the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

To develop Ponyta for Rapidash in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players need to get it to level 40. This can involve a lot of grinding as most Ponyta caught in the wild, especially in the former locations, will be at a low level. The level requirement to obtain a Rapidash is higher than most other Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.

Ponyta will continue to rise as long as it stays in a player’s party. The EXP share gives experience points, which are used to level Pokémon, to all Pokémon in a player’s party, regardless of which Pokémon participated in the battle or wild Pokémon encounters. Ponyta is often a useful Pokémon to have for a party as it is one of the few Fire-Types in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Having a Fire-Type can be especially helpful as players travel the snow-covered route to Snowpoint City and battle the Ice-Type gymnastics leader, Candice.

An alternative method of achieving Rapidash, which does not require a level 40 Ponyta, is to give Ponyta Rare Candy. Players can acquire a rare candy in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl by speaking with Professor Rowan’s assistant at Eterna City. Using Surf, a hidden feature that can be used in the upper world, players can find three rare candies along Route 214, Route 218 and Route 224. Solaceon Ruins, Stark Mountain and Wayward Cave are other places where players can rarely find candy.

One last method to achieve Rapidash is to trade with another player. Although Ponyta is not a Pokémon that evolves with trading, a player can receive a Rapidash via trading with another player in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl. Players can visit a Pokémon Center and go up the stairs to the left to start a trade, either using local play or a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.
