Theranos Inc. founder Elizabeth Holmes’ sometimes banal, sometimes eerie text messages with former President Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani have been released as an exhibit in her criminal fraud trial.

The government released the messages in anticipation that Holmes would try to blame Balwani for poor management of the company. Prosecutors said the texts support their argument that Balwani’s statements to federal regulators about his responsibilities to Theranos are “unreliable” because they may be colored by his love for Holmes.

The two had a 12-year relationship, and when Holmes took the lineup for a fourth day on Monday, she testified that Balwani had inflicted sexual and emotional abuse on her for a decade. She is facing cross-examination today.

The messages paint a picture of life for the couple: Exchanges about meetings and staff participation are mixed with flow details and updates about a cuddly fish – and many expressions of love.

Balwani is exuberant and often offers encouragement, advice and prayers to Holmes.

Balwani: I know things are tough, but do not give up on your dreams. Stay focused and keep fighting. Plan, focus, stay organized and stay in control. A person who has a plan and performs can defeat an army.

Balwani: I know what you’re thinking and going through. Control your thoughts and do not let fear control you. Breathe in and be aware of your breathing every hour and exhale fear.

Holmes: I love this.

In an exchange, he even suggests that Holmes meet one-on-one with self-help author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins: “He does not do this, but we can ask.”

For her part, Holmes’ answers are often short.

Balwani: Miss you in every breath and in every cell.

Holmes: Ditto

She uses “ditto” nine times in the texts that are part of the exhibition.

Balwani: My family sends love and prayers and you have prayers from thousands and thousands of people you have interrupted.

Balwani: Served

Holmes: Ditto
