WTA suspends tennis tournaments in China due to Peng Shuai case

The Women’s Tennis Association has announced that they are suspending all tennis tournaments in China out of concern for Chinese player Peng Shuai after she accused a senior official of sexual assault.

“As a result, and with the full support of the WTA Board, I announce the immediate suspension of all WTA tournaments in China, including Hong Kong. With a clear conscience, I can not see how I can ask our athletes to compete there when Peng Shuai is not allowed to communicate freely and has apparently been pressured to contradict her allegation of sexual assault, given the current situation I am also very concerned about the risks that all our players and staff may face if we were to hold events in China in 2022. “
