Job Summary

Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) is seeking a Student Services Specilaist who provides a broad range of support services to new, underprepared, and first-generation college students as well as working with faculty and other college staff in support of students’ success. The Student Services Specialist initiates student contact to ensure student success, monitors student academic progress to determine learning needs and strategies, and may provide mentoring and collegiate connections for attaining educational goals, degree completion, and/or career and vocational goals. The Student Services Specialist works directly with faculty in a co-curricular capacity to facilitate in-class orientations and workshops, and to connect students with academic services and student development resources to support student success.

Essential Functions
60% Provides support, guidance, and information to underprepared and first-generation college students regarding academic, employment, and other issues which may present barriers to academic success related to persistence, retention, and completion; Mentors students by providing support and feedback; Maintains ongoing communication through in-person meetings, phone calls, e-mails, and sponsored social events; Keeps records of success coaching sessions.

15% Facilitates student navigation of the campus, campus policies, and procedures; Builds relationships with faculty, staff, and peers; Recruits students through enrollment lists and referrals; Plans events for social integration; Presents workshops and in-class orientations to the LSC and academic success coaching program; attends department meetings.

15% Works as part of the Learning Success Center team; Collaborates with faculty and college staff to develop strategies to meet the academic success coaching needs of students; Serves as lead success coach to part-time success coaching staff; Works collaboratively with other departments and community organizations to facilitate student support services.

10% Monitors academic progress of students; Identifies needs and opportunities and refers students to appropriate campus resources; Compiles and analyzes data; Prepares reports related to the academic success coaching program; and other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution and one year of advanced program support involving program coordination, preferably in an educational setting.


An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Communication, or related field.
  2. Experience supervising staff or leading work teams.
  3. Experience providing success coaching or mentoring to college students.
  4. Experience collecting and analyzing data.
  5. Experience recruiting participants to join, not purchase, a program.
  6. Demonstrated evidence working with diverse faculty, staff, and students, including persons representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ethnicities, ages, genders, abilities, lifestyle preferences, and other diversities.

Special Working Conditions

  • May require possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver’s License or other valid United States Driver’s License; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving:

  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate’s own expense
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas
  • Will be required to travel or be assigned to all MCCCD locations
  • May require work off site or in a remote status
  • May require work or travel to the Black Mountain campus
  • May require numerous evenings or weekends
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs.
