Skilling: New Year’s snow lacks a record, but still impressive totals

The cleanup is underway, and sunshine has appeared Sunday after a snowstorm on New Year’s Day dropped 3 or more inches of snow over Chicagoland.

Saturday, January 1, 2022 marked only the 6th New Year’s Day since 1884, when 3 or more inches of snow fell on New Year’s Day here in Chicago.

The snow hit with strong winds with gusts up to 43 mph over the area on Saturday. The storm laid a shard of snow from the Rockies to the east over the plains and the Midwest.

Although it was significant, the snow did not succeed in establishing a new New Year’s record. The still-standing record for most snow on January 1 in the 137 years of official snow observations is 5 ″, which fell 104 years ago in 1918. Still, the volumes at airports here in the city came in at 4.2 ″ at Midway and 4, 1 ″ at O’Hare – so we just missed the record.

The volumes of this weekend’s winter snowstorm from southeastern Wisconsin south across the Greater Chicago area and northwest Indiana ranged from 1 to 8 “- with the largest number of reports in the Chicago area ranging from 3 to 5” – but as high as 6.5 “at Hoffman Estates and 5.5 ″ at Evanston and Waukegan.
