Overview

Utah State University Extension invites applications for an Area County Extension faculty, 12-month, tenure track position. Extension faculty develop, implement, evaluate, and coordinate research-based educational programs to enhance quality of life for youth and adults.  Extension faculty also recruit, train and supervise volunteer leaders and serve as a liaison between local clientele, other resource agencies, and Utah State University administrators, faculty, and programs. This Extension position includes university responsibilities and is split between Juab and Utah Counties.

An office will be provided at the USU Extension offices in Nephi and Orem, Utah. 

Juab County is located in central Utah and borders Utah County to the south. Most of Juab County consists of federal land. There are five major population areas in Juab County including Nephi, Mona, Levan, Eureka, and West Desert. Nephi the largest of those and is the county seat. Juab County continues to grow in population due to the close proximity to larger cities in Utah County. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant with Little Sahara sand dunes, Yuba reservoir state park, Topaz Mountain in the west desert, and Mt. Nebo (highest peak on the Wasatch mountain range).

Utah County is located in northern Utah along the Wasatch Front corridor. It borders Juab County on the North. It is a county with a booming population, strong technology industries located at Silicon Slopes, and two major universities, Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant with ski resorts, Utah Lake, National Forests, and blue-ribbon trout fishing on the Provo River.

The position requires knowledge of farm management, enterprise budgets, farm financial health, farm and ranch record keeping, risk management as related to agricultural operations, evaluation of profitable agricultural enterprises, ability to identify and analyze diverse and innovative agricultural enterprises in order to increase profitability, farm and ranch succession planning, and understanding of agricultural credit. We welcome candidates with diverse interests and experience related to these areas. The successful applicant will work with diverse agricultural enterprises including but not limited to tree fruit industry, livestock, hay production, and small farms/ranchettes.

Rank will commensurate with experience, qualifications and current rank. Appointment opportunities include Extension Assistant/Associate Professor (tenure track). A master’s degree is required.

Estimated start date is February 1, 2022

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to Extension activities such as farm management, farm enterprise budgets, farm and ranch record keeping, risk management as related to agricultural operations, ways to increase profitability for farmers and ranchers, and other innovative agricultural economic and agribusiness programs.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate agricultural economic and agribusiness programs for adults.
  • Develop partnerships and employ innovative approaches to reach clientele and new audiences.
  • Work closely with partner organizations such as Farm Bureau, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, and Conservation Districts.
  • Work with on-campus specialists in developing applied research projects and program development and delivery to clientele. Close partnerships and collaboration with on-campus Agricultural Extension Specialists will be expected.
  • Pursue internal and external funding to support Extension programming.
  • Document impacts and produce scholarly publications based on Extension programming.
  • Manage budgets, personnel, and volunteers.
  • Serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.
  • Serve and collaborate with other Extension and University personnel, community and government agencies, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned master’s degree in the areas of agricultural economics, agribusiness, or other closely related agricultural field.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct educational programs.
  • Experience in teaching adult audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to farm management programs.
  • Proven success in implementing programs that increased profitability for farmers and ranchers.
  • Skills and experience with implementing applied research activities.
  • Skills and experience in writing scholarly publications.
  • Skills and experience with grant writing.
  • Skills and experience with low income and under-served audiences.
  • Skills and experience with social media.
  • Skills and experience in developing on-line courses.
  • Skills and experience with related organizations/agencies and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Prior experience with the Land Grant University System.
  • Ability to converse and write in the Spanish language.
