There is often a complaint about Hollywood for the apparent lack of originality, especially with regard to the reliance on remakes. While this may be a problem for some, there are times when it’s fun to watch a new version of a familiar story. Fortunately for fans of movie remakes, 2022 has a lot to offer during the year.
The most exciting remakes coming this year include something for everyone, from family-friendly adventures to retellings of classic horror movies. There are some remakes that bring back familiar stories and some that give a new chance to some overlooked ones. With all the 2022 remakes ahead, it will be interesting to see if anyone can surpass their originals.
The iconic author Stephen King is responsible for countless beloved works, many of which have received Hollywood treatment. One of the most underrated films based on a King novel was Firestarter from 1984 starring a young Drew Barrymore.
The story of a young girl who develops pyrotechnic abilities gets a retelling with Zac Efron playing the father of the young girl with the dangerous abilities, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong. It’s an interesting thriller story, and the father-daughter aspect could create an effective new version.
9 Cheaper By The Dozen
Fans are probably most familiar with the 2003 version of Cheaper by the dozen with Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in the lead roles, which in itself was a remake of the 1950 version. The simple concept of family comedy finds a father who has to deal with the various complications of taking care of his twelve children when his wife is out of town.
The new version is written by Black-like creator Kenya Barris and will play Gabrielle Union and Zack Braff as leaders of a mixed family trying to run their various children and their family business. With the talent involved, this could be a much more interesting family comedy than just another retreaded one.
8 The Crimes of the Future
While remakes usually include new filmmakers taking material from others, The crimes of the future offers a rare case of a filmmaker making their own film about. The acclaimed horror film author David Cronenberg made the first time The crimes of the future in 1970 without getting that much attention.
With a higher status in the film industry now, Cronenberg is able to approach sci-fi history again with people like Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart in the cast. The film takes place in a not too distant future as humanity undergoes a metamorphosis.
7 Salems Lot
Another of Stephen King’s works will be re-recorded in 2022 with a new version of Salems Lot. The 1975 novel follows a young author who returns to his hometown to find inspiration for his new book. But while he is there, he discovers that the city is being raped by a vampire.
The film has been adapted several times, the most popular being the two-part TV film from 1979. It will be interesting to see how the scary story is brought to the big screen, especially with writer-director Gary Dauberman, who has helped horror films as f .ex. Annabelle and Nuns.
6 The father of the bride
With pleasure Cheaper by the dozen, the brides father was a family comedy from 1950, which was later transformed into a more popular version starring Steve Martin. And once again, the film will be retold again in 2022 with an updated approach.
The new version will focus on a Cuban-American family with Andy Garcia stepping into the role of the titular father. It’s an interesting approach, as Garcia is not known as a comic performer and seems like an unusual choice to take on Martin, but the story is ultimately sweet about the family, and it will be fun to watch this new version of the material.
As the face of the long-running horror franchise, Pinhead is one of the most iconic movie villains ever. However, his debut film Hellraiser is often overlooked as the nuanced and disturbing horror story of an ancient artifact that unleashed demons who rejoice in torturing their victims.
Much like many of the other horror movie icons of the past, Pinhead gets an update for modern audiences. This will be the eleventh Hellraiser film to date, but it will mark the first time that Pinhead is played by a female actress with Jamie Clayton taking on the role in the remake.
4 The poisonous avenger
It’s not just well-known hits that get remakes, as Hollywood occasionally likes to revisit the potential of a cult classic. That’s the way it is The poisonous avenger which began as a low-budget Trauma horror film that garnered huge acclaim.
The remake is already getting a lot of attention thanks to the very exciting casting of Peter Dinklage in the lead role as a janitor who falls into radioactive waste and becomes a super powerful hero. The film also stars as Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon, while promising to be a wild ride.
It has been a common trend for Disney to make their classic animated films, such as Lions King and Aladdin. So it was only a matter of time before they got around to one of their most beloved stories with Pinocchio.
The live-action adventure will be directed by Robert Zemeckis and will play Tom Hanks as Geppetto, the lone carpenter who makes a tree boy who is magically brought to life. Interestingly, the film will compete with Guillermo del Toro’s darker stop-motion animated version of the classic story.
2 Death on the Nile
The murder mystery genre has seen a resurgence lately with movies like Knives Out entertaining audience. Murder of the Orient Express followed suit by bringing Agatha Christie’s popular novel to the big screen again. Kenneth Branagh returns to the sequel, Death on the Nile, as both the famous detective Hercule Poirot and the film’s director.
Although it is a successor, Death on the Nile was already adapted into a popular film from 1978. This new adaptation features an all-star cast including Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright and Russell Brand.
The strange and quirky family-friendly adventure Matilda is a nostalgic movie for many fans who grew up in the 1990s. It follows the titular young girl whose radiant mind is overlooked by her malicious parents and her cruel principal. But with the support of her true friends, she is able to take a stand.
Although based on the same Roald Dahl book, the new remake will certainly have to contend with the popularity of the 1996 film. But the film boasts an impressive cast, including Emma Thompson as the evil Miss Trunchbull.
