About the department and the

The Department of Engineering Management, Systems and Technology offers a Bachelor of Science in engineering
technology with majors in electronic and computer engineering technology, industrial engineering technology and mechanical engineering
technology. The Department also offers a Master of Science in engineering management, a Master of Science in systems engineering, and a
tentative Doctorate of Engineering in systems engineering. The department currently has 266 undergraduate majors, 78 graduate students, 13
tenure-line faculty, 2 faculty of practice, 1 lecturer, an educational laboratory supervisor, and a small number of adjunct faculty. With an
emphasis on experiential, application-based learning, the department is uniquely positioned to emphasize a strong undergraduate engineering
technology program and strong graduate programs in engineering management and systems engineering. 

Continuing on its trajectory
of growth, UD enrolls 11,300 students, including 8,225 full-time undergraduates. UD is one of the nation’s largest Catholic
universities, and the largest private university in Ohio. Embedded in the dynamic city of Dayton, OH, and grounded in its Catholic,
Marianist tradition, UD provides education to develop the whole student and is committed to experiential learning.

The University
comprises five academic units: The College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business Administration, Education and Health Sciences,

About the position

The chairperson is responsible
for administrative, curricular, co-curricular and budgetary facets of the department. The Chair will have an opportunity to lead the
department in efforts to expand a strong and collegial undergraduate engineering technology program and graduate programs in engineering
management and systems engineering; hire and mentor faculty; expand a burgeoning effort in diversity, equity, and inclusion; and maintain
and strengthen courses taken by EMST students. The successful candidate should be an inspiring, energetic and well-organized leader who can
effectively engage with all faculty, staff and students within the department and who can build and sustain partnerships across the
University and in the broader community.

Minimum qualifications

  • Graduate degree in
    a field of study related to one of EMST’s academic programs.
  • At least 2 years of industrial or professional engineering
  • Qualifications commensurate with a tenured faculty position in an engineering, engineering technology or related
  • Successful collaborative leadership skills.
  • Record of success in teaching and scholarly activities as
    evidenced by

    • demonstrated highly effective teaching in most courses taught as evidenced through self-reflection and peer
      evaluations of teaching;
    • demonstrated record of peer-reviewed archival journal and conference publications; and
    • record of
      procuring funding and service as PI or Co-PI on national, regional, or local grants, or industrial contracts with a record of proposal
      writing and submission to external agencies.
  • Record of service to the department or broader university community as
    evidenced by significant contribution to school and/or university level committee or multiple school or departmental committees.
  • Excellent written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion.

Appointment at the rank of professor includes all of the above qualifications and requires a record of teaching, research and service
commensurate with the criteria for the rank of professor in the Department of Engineering Management, Systems and Technology in the School
of Engineering at the University of Dayton.

Preferred qualifications

While not everyone may possess all preferred
qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

  • Doctorate in a field of study related to one of
    EMST’s academic programs.
  • Three or more years of industrial or professional engineering experience. 
  • Excellent
    interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Successful experience in one or more of the
  • Academic administrative leadership experience.
  • Growing academic programs in terms of enrollment, academic
    quality, research and physical infrastructure.
  • Fostering industrial and academic partnerships.
  • Developing new academic
    programs and initiatives.
  • External accreditation processes.
  • Successful experience in recruiting, mentoring, and retaining
    diverse students, faculty, and staff 
  • An articulated appreciation of the Catholic and Marianist perspective on education,
    which includes educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a
    commitment of service to the community, University, and profession.
