Originally created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez and made their debut in the 1982s New Teen Titans Nr. 23, Adrian Chase served as a district attorney in New York before choosing to seek his own justice as the anti-hero Vigilante after the murder of his wife and children of gangsters who originally used non-lethal methods to do so. In the course of his own cartoon, Vigilante began to struggle with the pain he brought to his various enemies, and would later retire from the mantle and leave it to Alan Wells and Dave Winston.

Vigilante and Adrian Chase previously made their live-action debut in The CW’s Arrowverse on Arrow, in which Josh Segarra portrays the latter and acts as the primary antagonist for Arrow season 5, while the former was brought to life by Clayton Chitty and Johann Urb as the original character Vincent Sobel, who wore the Vigilante cloak. The character is set to make his DC Extended Universe debut in Founder of Peace with Freddie Stroma portraying the Chase incarnation of Vigilante as a sidekick to John Cena’s titular character. Gunn and DC Film’s rapid development and production of the DCEU series by the end of 2020, and the show is now preparing for its HBO Max arrival.

Prior to the show’s premiere, Gunn spoke exclusively with Screen Rant to offer insight for his Suicide Squad spin-off series Founder of Peace. As he watched the introduction of the character to DCEU, Gunn Peacemaker explained his relationship with Vigilante and praised actor Freddie Stroma for his chemistry with Cena and the ability to bring the character to life. See what Gunn shared below:

“Yeah, I think so too. I think Freddie is just amazing and the chemistry between him and John is amazing. Freddie is so good at it. He’s such a sociopath, such a psychopath, and yet sweet at the same time. There’s an innocence for him, even though he does these horrible things, and completely lacks empathy and emotion in a way that Peacemaker is not. Very different from Peacemaker in that way. One is a guy who struggles with it. “he does. and the other guy is a guy who does not struggle at all with what he does, but loves Peacemaker unconditionally, which is an interesting relationship.”

Founder of Peace and Vigilante

Previous trailers and clips Founder of Peace has certainly teased an interesting dynamic between him and Vigilante in the upcoming DCEU series, where both clearly enjoy their status as action heroes in the world. But as Gunn mentioned above, the show will explore Cena’s character, who is actually struggling with the violence needed to carry out much of his missions, an interesting development from his debut in The suicide group. With Vigilante, who appears to be at the height of his crime-fighting career in Founder of Peace, it certainly seems to fall in line with the comics where Chase occasionally dived too far into his alter ego and the violence that came with it.

Given Gunn’s teasing of their various approaches to combating crime, a “interesting relationship, “those familiar with the comics may begin to wonder if the show could create a battle between Vigilante and Founder of Peace as seen in the comics. Since the creator has already confirmed plans to continue working with DC and be ready for season 2, if HBO Max were to renew the series, it would be an interesting approach similar to Jigsaw in Netflix’s The punisher to establish Vigilante as a main character before he saw him move on to the dark side and work towards the titular character. Only time will tell what the future brings for the character when Founder of Peace premieres on HBO Max on January 13th.
