In recent years, Netflix has made it clear that they would rather create new shows than renew old ones. Unless a show has the critics’ acclaim Ozark or the oversized popularity of Bridgerton, it is unlikely to last more than three seasons. Even when a show seems to be hitting, Netflix is more than willing to cut the lid after a season. That’s exactly what happened The irregular ones, Jupiter’s inheritance, and Cowboy Bebop in 2021. But viewership is what most of these decisions really depend on, which is why Netflix has just renewed Emily and Paris for season 3 and season 4.
Emily and Paris returns to Netflix for seasons 3 and 4
On Monday, Netflix announced that it has renewed Emily and Paris for another two seasons.
Emily is Paris is a comedy about a young marketing manager who moves from Chicago to Paris after her company bought a French luxury marketing company. She is responsible for modernizing the company’s social media strategy. Along the way, she makes new friends, meets potential suitors, all the while trying to fit in with her job. The show was a hit for Netflix in its first season with 58 million views in the first 28 days of service. The second season has been just as big, topping Netflix’s global top 10 list with 107.6 million hours watched in its first week. Season 1 also regained a place in the top 10.

In season 2, which is now more entrenched in her life in Paris, Emily gets better at navigating the city, but she still struggles with French life. After stumbling into a love triangle with her neighbor and her first real French friend, Emily is determined to focus on her work – which is getting more complicated day by day. In French lessons, she meets a seconded colleague who both makes her angry and fascinates.
Why does it matter?
There are obviously lots of people who love Emily and Paris, but the general consensus around the show is a bit complicated. At least more than your average Netflix original.
Slate published a piece entitled “Emily and Paris Is the Hate Watch We Can’t Stop Watching ”shortly after the first season hit Netflix in 2020. As Willa Paskin noted in her play, the titular Emily is unbearable. Twitter may not be the reality, but anyone with a Twitter account who watched the show seemed to have the same reaction to the main character. They did not see because they wanted her to succeed. Emily is not learning, she is not growing, and she is not very interesting. And so people hate-watch because she keeps succeeding in spite of all this.
Rotten Tomatoes is not a particularly useful metric for shows, however Emily and Paris still scored quite low. The first season is below average 63%, while season 2 managed to climb to 70% with critics. However, the audience score is much lower and dipped below 40% in season 2.
Nevertheless, people are watching, and Netflix does not care why. Therefore, the company pulled the plug Cowboy Bebop just weeks before doubling Emily and Paris.
