Pope comes on a surprising visit to Rome’s record store, gets a classic CD

ROME, JANUARY 11 (Reuters) – Pope Francis, a lover of classical music, slipped out of the Vatican on Tuesday night to visit old friends who run a record store in Rome, and came from there with a gift in the form of a CD.

The visit was supposed to have remained private, but Javier Martinez-Brocal, a reporter for the TV news agency Rome Reports, was by chance in the area, filmed it with his smartphone and posted it on Twitter.

Francis stayed inside the StereoSound record store near the old Pantheon for a little over 10 minutes. A Vatican spokesman said Francis had gone there to bless the store because it had recently been renovated.

Martinez-Brocal told Reuters that the store’s owners told him they had become friends with the pope years ago when he was Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires.

He wanted to visit their store to buy classical music records and CDs when he was in Rome for Church business and lived in a nearby residence to visit pastors.

They said they gave the pope a CD of classical music, but declined to be more specific. Francis is known for liking Beethoven, Mozart and Bach – and even tango music from his native Argentina.

The video showed the pope failing to fire-proof cars leaving the store and getting into a simple white Fiat 500 with Vatican license plates.

This was not the first time the Pope had visited a shop in Rome. In 2015, two years after the election, he ordered a pair of new glasses from a Roman optician.

They should have been delivered to the Vatican, but he decided to pick them up himself.
