A longtime X-Men ‘ally’ is becoming the X-Force’s deadliest villain

X-Force # 27 brings the title into Destiny of X, as Benjamin Percy and Robert Gill pose the X-Men security team against a threat from Krakoa.

Marvel’s X-Force is facing a threat from Krakoa itself.

Starting in April, X-Men’s elite security team will fight Cerebrax, a mysterious threat that emerges in the wake of X Lives of Wolverine/X Deaths of Wolverine. Author Benjamin Percy will continue to direct X-Force along with pencil and color artist Robert Gill, who is now taking over as the artist of the ongoing series. The first issue of this new bow, X-Force # 27, will feature a head cover of Marvel Stormbreaker Joshua Cassara and a variation of Gill.

Percy says that Cerebrax is a Cerebro device that, after gaining sensation, develops a hunger for intelligence and power. Cerebro has been a staple of the X-Men since the franchise’s inception. Traditionally worn by Professor Xavier, the helmet enhances the wearer’s psychic abilities and connects them with the mind of those around them. Marvel teases when Cerebrax wakes up, it will target Forge, the X-Force’s native technical genius. Cassara’s cover to X-Force # 27 shows Forge wearing Cerebrax, while Gill’s variant shows Cerebrax attached to team members, suggesting that the machine will force its will into the X-Force.

In addition to Cerebrax’s arrival, Percy teases it X-Force‘s upcoming arc will see the Kid Omega undergo a significant transformation. The development of the Quentin Quire has been a recurring plot thread throughout X-Force, as the youngster is slowly coming to terms with his role in the X-Men and his potential as a mutant at the Omega level. Furthermore, Percy says the X-Forces list will experience a shake-up in the coming months as they prepare to confront Man With the Peacock Tattoos’ true identity.

Since its launch in 2019, Percy’s incarnation of X-Force has positioned the team as Krakow’s intelligence, security and military all-in-one, and has become the mutant equivalent of the CIA. But after connecting to a mutant named Pike, Wolverine dropped his guard, making the team susceptible to a trap. Girl betrayed Logan’s trust and kidnapped a trio of mutant babies and passed them on to X-Men’s enemies. Although X-Force managed to rescue two of the children, it failed to retrieve the third. This failure has weakened the team, making them vulnerable to Cerebrax’s attacks.

X-Forces new direction is only part of “Destiny of X,” a new status quo that will embrace the X-Men titles beginning in March. The series produced under this banner will be jumping points for new readers while pushing the existing narratives forward. The line starts with Immortal X-Men by Kieren Gillen and Lucas Werneck, who focus on the Quiet Council, which has learned the truth behind the possible downfall of mutant cheeks. Now Krakoa’s governing body must push forward to try to prevent the dark future of Moira MacTaggart’s past life.

Written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Robert Gill, X-Force # 27 goes on sale on April 6 from Marvel Comics.
