Position Summary:

Texas State Technical College is tasked with contributing
to the educational and economic development of the State of Texas through providing advanced technical programs.

The Access &
Learning Specialist position is crucial in facilitating the implementation of academic accommodations, services, and access to campus life
for students with disabilities in order to assist students in achieving their personal and professional goals. As an Enrollment Management
team member, this position will seek knowledge of and pledges to actively engage in a Culture of Caring striving to respond systematically
to student needs and remove barriers that may prevent students from achieving their personal and professional goals. 

Essential
Functions:

  • Employee will demonstrate TSTC Core values of Excellence, Accountability, Service and Integrity with internal and
    external stakeholders, customers, students and members of the community.
  • This position will contribute to assisting applicants with
    a disability enroll at TSTC. Types of duties include but are not limited to:
  • Provide information to prospective students regarding
    Texas State Technical College’s technical programs including basic information about the application process, financial aid programs,
    eligibility requirements, registration and military programs and benefits. This may include representing TSTC at Transition Fairs and other
    events in the community.
  • Assist applicants with connecting to an enrollment coach. The Access & Learning Specialist will partner
    with the Enrollment Coach to offer support with academic considerations during the enrollment process.
  • Review test scores and
    transcripts for Texas Success Initiative (TSI) compliance to provide feedback to the Enrollment Coach on the appropriate developmental
    course placement.
  • Performs intakes with applicants who self-report disabilities, submits to the statewide analyst and facilitates
    the accommodation process.
  • Assist applicants with identifying college resources that will be able to assist them in being
    successful by implementing the Culture of Caring.

This position will provide assistance in Veterans Affairs (VA) School
Certifying Specialist, in processing of complex procedures that impact educational benefits for service members, veterans, and their
dependents. Provides assistance and support for veterans in the completion, collection and submission of required documents to enroll or
obtain educational benefits.

This position will assist students with a disability. Types of duties include but are not limited
to:

  • Performs intakes with students who self-report disabilities, submits to the statewide analyst and facilitate the
    accommodation process. 
  • Provides innovative services and support for students with learning disabilities, attention deficit
    disorder, and other physical, medical, or psychological conditions.
  • Assist students with connecting to a Student Resource Center
    (SRC) Enrollment Coach. The Access & Learning Specialist will partner with the SRC Enrollment Coach to offer support with academic
    considerations.
  • Performs routine check-ins with students on caseload to ensure accommodations are being provided and that the
    accommodations are appropriate for the student. These check-ins should support student’s academic development and use of academic strategies
    and assistive technologies.
  • Assists the Testing Center in coordinating appropriate testing accommodations for students with
    disabilities; as needed. Coordinates the reformatting or alternate formatting, and the giving of exam for instructors providing exams to
    disabled students. Coordinates the reading of exams for students needing modifications/extra time.
  • Orders material in alternate
    format for blind, dyslexic and learning disabled students as needed. Tapes and coordinates the taping of written items into an alternative
    format as needed.
  • Coordinates the checking out, installation, and distribution of assistive and adaptive equipment and instructs
    students on how to use this equipment.
  • Identifies and collaborates in initiatives to create programming that provides services for
    deaf and hearing-impaired students. Facilitates the scheduling, verification of services and billing of interpreters and any applicable
    contracted service on campus.
  • Develop institutional and community partnerships and resources to maximize delivery of services.

This position will foster communication. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Respond in a
    timely manner to all applicant inquiries received via email, text and phone systems.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff in academic
    and administrative departments across campus to implement accommodations and promote universal design principles.
  • Communicates and
    works with Access and Learning Analysts to ensure students receive timely notifications of Access and Learning accommodations and for
    guidance.
  • Communicate to applicants and students in a clear and concise manner, update comments and document all conversations in
    the appropriate area using assigned student information system.
  • Possess a general understanding of college policies, procedures,
    requirements, and effectively communicate them to applicants and students.

This position will promote a positive campus
environment for those with disabilities. Types of duties include but are not limited to:

  • Offer informative
    workshops/presentations to faculty, staff, and students to increase knowledge and sensitivity awareness of learning disabilities. Help
    organize events, perform workshops, and develop relationships with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Participate in
    campus events including New Student Orientation (NSO), Commencement, Registration Rallies, Move-In, etc.
  • Participates in program
    planning that provide access and dignity for those with disabilities and develops plans to support access to courses, programs, facilities,
    services, and activities on campus.

Minimum Requirements

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in
    education, special education, counseling, social work and/or related field required. Three years of experience may substitute
    for educational requirement.

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in disability services, admissions,
    financial aid, records, registration, veterans programs, or other higher education settings, or projects or programs related to human
    resource development, counseling, educational development, job training, economic development or participant case
    management.
  • Knowledge of current college admissions rules and regulations.
  • Minimum 2 year experience in admissions,

Knowledge / Skills /Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of the Americans with Disability Acts and Amendments Act of 2008
    (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974 and Fair Housing Standards.
  • Ease in working with students with psychiatric
    disorders, physical disabilities, and chronic medical conditions.
  • Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to
    develop original ideas to solve problems. 
  • Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the
    responsibilities of the position including the Federal Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) with the ability to maintain strict
    confidentiality at all times.
  • Thorough knowledge of college policies, procedures, and requirements.
  • Skills in judgment and
    decision-making, problem solving.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using
    communication, counseling, and problem-solving skills.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with
    minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions and
    skill in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated computer
    proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.) or equivalent software, the internet, email messaging, and web-based software
    applications and experience using on-line student information systems. Advanced computer knowledge with the ability to understand and learn
    new on-line programs.
  • Ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing
    with students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Skill in independently composing letters, memos, 4 reports, and written communication materials
    using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Skill in accurate record keeping
    with strict attention to detail.
  • Skill in organizing tasks, documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy.
