While Bollywood, whether the big screen or the OTT world, has tended to hand out thrillers on the edge of the seat every now and then (yes, that’s the one genre we actually excel at both critically and commercially since the late 1950s, go check out the archives (if you do not believe me) on a variety of topics, but the one path that has not been explored so far is the medical-themed thriller. Aside from the astonishing Ankur Arora murder case back in 2013, nothing, or at least, nothing remarkable comes to mind. In such a scenario, Disney + Hotstar has come out with their new web series Human, starring two of our country’s most underrated actresses, Shefali Shah and Kirti Kulhari. So is it the manager to breathe life and interest into thrillers with media themes? The answer to that is a resounding ‘YES’!

What is it about
Dr. Saira Sabarwal (Kirti Kulhari) is recruited on Dr. Gauri Nath (Shefali Shah)’s pioneering hospital in Bhopal, where she is hailed as a messiah and along with her husband (Ram Kapoor), has tremendous influence over the length and breath of the city in all the important places. At the same time, human trials with an unsafe new drug are not performed in the most ethical ways, which sees Saira slowly but surely being drawn deeper into the medical evil that is unfolding.

What’s hot
Man is hitting hard where it matters most, by addressing the doubts many have about COVID-19 vaccination and how safe they are. It does, though with sensitivity without any sensationalization it keeps us glued to our seats with a layered, well-researched tale of an unknown abdomen of medical science that manages well around gimmicks, shortcuts, or shock value to make its point. Yes, Human is shocking, but it shocks you with a detailed plot and mysterious characters rather than sudden detours, and frankly, such shocks leave a far more indelible effect. It also tells how sublots like feminism, class divide and the Bhopal gastronomy are imprinted in the script and help to influence the story.
Of course, half of this would not have been achieved if Mozez Singh and Vipul Amrutlal Shah did not have the actors to back them up, with Shefali Shah delivering a performance through the ages, diving deep into the cerebral complexity of her role , emerges with a tour de force that makes us think long after. Shefali is bottle versatility; compare her actions in Dil Dhadakne Do, Delhi Crime and this and you will feel like you are seeing three different artists with the same face. Kirti Kulhari is a perfect foil for her and never ceases to amaze us with how she keeps reinventing herself as a breath of fresh air but never goes overboard.
It may also pay off that these two are surrounded by a first-class supporting role, including Vishal Jethwa, Seema Biswas, Ram Kapoor, Aditya Shrivastava, plus a veteran like Mohan Agashe. It pays off when the technical details of an OTT project are as polished as they are in Human, where the production design, color schemes, cinematography and background results are things in the top drawer.
What is not
Without revealing much, there is a plot device that deals with pain relief in a person’s cerebral cortex, which may pass for those who have not seen or read much about it before, but who will stick out like a sore thumb with their presentations to those who know. a thing or two about it. Besides that, Human also falls into the trap of what plagues most Indian web series these days – being stretched too long as the show could easily have been trimmed to half an hour per week. paragraphs or eight paragraphs instead of ten at the original. length per episode. Although the feminist themes are strong and relevant, at times they do so foolishly by exceeding misandri.

Shefali Shah is first class in a very complex and tough role, Kirti Kulhari never ceases to amaze and is a perfect foil for her, they are surrounded by a supporting role to die for and even though the performance was not so good, Disney Hotstar’s new web series , Human, would still be an ingenious, lavish watch as a first-class medical thriller. I go with 4 out of 5 stars.
