MCU’s next Larson-directed film, The Marvels, can solve the biggest problem Carol Danvers has faced since her MCU debut thanks to its character list.
2023s The Marvels could potentially solve Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) biggest MCU problem. Captain Marvel finally made his MCU debut in the 2019 film of the same name, which marked the first woman-led project at MCU. Apart from appearances by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Captain Marvel was a contained story with minimal connections to the parent MCU.
Larson repeated his role in Avengers: Endgame and appeared in the mid-credits scene of Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings. However, Carol Danvers still suffers from a major problem, even with three MCU appearances already under her belt. Apart from Nick Fury and Monica Rambeau, Danvers has no strong ties to any MCU character, which makes her feel trapped in certain ensemble scenes. Throughout the MCU, the Avengers have been built as a family or a group of friends rather than a bunch of colleagues, but Captain Marvel’s lack of emotional connection to the other Avengers breaks this form and damages her character.
Thankfully, Marvel Studios has a great opportunity to address this issue with their next Larson-led outing, The Marvels. That Captain Marvel the sequel promises to focus on a small group of heroes consisting of Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau as Spectrum (Teyonah Paris) and Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani). This gives Danvers the chance to form deeper connections with other MCU characters and drop the lone wolf act that has held back her character development. Moreover, The Marvels could easily include appearances from other MCU heroes like War Machine (Don Cheadle), allowing Marvel Studios to adapt the romantic relationship he shared with Danvers in the comics.
Just as Captain America (Chris Evans) had Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Captain Marvel was also able to form a close friendship with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan and deepen her connection to the wider MCU. This would solve Danvers’ problem by increasing the number of characters she has real relationships with, making her a more integral part of the common universe. Teased briefly Playoffs, The Marvels could continue to pursue the romance of Rhodey and Danvers, giving Danvers a strong link to one of the oldest MCU characters, further enriching her sense of belonging to the broader MCU from the audience’s point of view.
Due to the involvement of Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan, Carol Danvers may begin to form meaningful relationships with several MCU characters whose lack has held her character back since her debut. This can also be transferred to Avengers 5, where she is bound to interact with several major MCU characters and continue to build friendships. A romantic relationship with Rhodey would also speed up the resolution of this issue, but his appearance in the sequel is still unconfirmed. The Marvels have a lot of questions to answer and a lot of problems from the first one Captain Marvel to correct when it is released worldwide on February 17, 2023.
