Greater Dallas Big Brothers Big Sisters need more mentors – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Cruz Gonzales praises his mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, which has been named Greater Dallas Big Brother of the Year.

“I really think he deserves this because he’s been a really good person to everyone and especially me,” Little Brother said through the Cruz Gonzales program.

For the past six years, Alberto Morales has served as his big brother.

“He’s a really smart guy,” Gonzales said. “He helps me a lot with schoolwork. We go to the library and study, and he helps me with homework when I have problems. I really look up to him because he’s been to college.”

Morales said he knew he could make a difference in a child’s life.

“I know how important it was for me to have an older sibling to guide me while I was growing up,” said Greater Dallas Big Brother of the Year Alberto Morales. “I figured if someone else needed the same help, I could be it for them.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters in this area still need more help. We are told that there are almost 500 children on a waiting list and the majority are boys.

“Parents and guardians refer their sons, boys, in a three-to-one relationship to girls,” said Greater Dallas Area Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star Market President Jenny Harper. “So it’s really a call to the men out there. Let’s get these boys off the waiting list. They want a mentor. They want someone in their lives. Let’s see what we can do to give them someone.”

Gonzales’ mother Sandra Guerrero said he waited two years for his big brother.

“It’s a little sad because there are not many guys doing this,” Sandra Guerrero said. “I wish there were more guys doing this for little kids.”

A wait said Gonzales was worth it, but the wishes had happened before.

“If I never had a big brother, I do not know where I would have been right now,” Gonzales said. “But I know I would not have been right here. It has really affected me a lot, because without him I probably would not have felt as good in school as I do right now.”
