A man has been arrested and jailed after threatening to kill people with a meat mincer in the Downtown Eastside Women’s Center on Sunday.
The 31-year-old suspect followed a woman into the Columbia Street community center just after noon. 13.00 and began uttering threats while holding the knife, said police in a Monday news release.
The man eventually threw the knife and walked away. The officers arrested him nearby. Police applauded “quick-thinking” witnesses who grabbed the knife from the ground, called 911 and pointed to the suspect.
“Many violent crimes are unreported in Downtown Eastside and this arrest was made possible because more people acted quickly and did the right thing, ”said Sgt. Steve Addison in the release.
“Their actions enabled VPD officers to react immediately and arrest a violent suspect before anyone was physically injured.
Police recommend a handful of charges against the suspect in connection with weapons, assault and breach of bail.
