Dark bananas are usually not very appealing. But this bunch of artfully spotted beauties has come under the skin of thousands of admirers around the world.

One even copies the Mona Lisa, while others depict Adele, David Bowie and John Travolta.

They are all the fruit of the work of amateur artist Anna Chojnicka, who discovered her ‘banana bruiser’ art form while isolating herself in March last year. Her Instagram gallery has more than 15,000 followers. Bananas oxidize or turn brown when enzymes are released and react with the air.

Miss Chojnicka, 36, from London, uses a nail clipper, an instrument used by sewers, to prick the bananas. Each takes 90 minutes. She says: ‘Controlling bruises evokes light and shadow. I photograph every banana – then eat it. ‘
