Marvel’s Hulk hints at a much darker Hulk

After the terrifying version of the material came to a conclusion with the latest issue of Immortal Hulk, has Marvel’s latest version of the big green giant taken things in a whole new direction, or has it? Writer Donny Cates took the plunge into the Hulk after finishing his work on Venom with superstar artist Ryan Ottley on the ride, and riding is the right word. In the new series, The Hulk and Bruce Banner have never been more blasted or whole. The Hulk’s body is now a spaceship, controlled by Banner from his mind, but driven by the rage inside, and the latest issue teased that something else is inside as well, something more eerie.

Like we said, the Hulk’s rage is what drives the “starship” in this latest story arc, aptly titled “SMASHSTRONAUT”, but this week’s edition revealed a surprising presence inside the Hulk’s mind along with his rage, which apparently teased a darker version of Hulken. This presence first appears in the opening of the number and taunts Banner in a dream, but it reappears later to also mock the Hulk. It’s unclear exactly what this new Hulk persona is, or whether it’s one we’re already familiar with, but it looks like he’s going to be a big part of the story, as recent calls from Marvel indicates.

The cover photo for Hulk # 6, due out in April, seems to be teasing that this alternative Dark Hulk is on the verge of breaking out, and with a crossover between Thor and Hulk on the horizon, it could mean a disaster for the two Avengers ( or at least a compelling reason why they are fighting again). Whether this new Dark Hulk ends up being the pilot for the Hulk, the fuel for the spaceship or his own unit at all, leaves a lot of questions for fans while we wait for the story arc to unfold.
