Venom Writer Shoots Down Fans’ Doctor Strange 2 / Fuck Theories

Following fan speculation, Venom writer Donny Cates debunks the idea that Knull is in the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Following the release of the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at Superbowl LVI, fans began speculating about just who appeared in that new footage for the Marvel Cinematic Universe film. One popular theory claimed the trailer showed Knull, but that character’s co-creator, Donny Cates, says that is not the case, though he’s not entirely certain.

On Twitter, Cates came back from a short hiatus from the platform to say, “That’s not Knull in that Doctor Strange trailer.” However, in a subsequent post, Cates added, “Or maybe … it is ?? I do not know.”

Created by Cates and Ryan Stegman, Knull first appeared in 2013’s Thor: God of Thunder # 6, though he did not make his full debut until 2018’s Venom # 3. Knull is the the God of the Symbiotes and, as such, boasts a number of incredible powers that have made him a formidable for some of the strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe. Knull served as the main antagonist for the King in Black event, which saw him launching an attack against Earth.

Knull is just one of many characters fans are speculating as having appeared in the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Some other characters fans think might appear in the trailer are Nova and Tom Cruise’s version of Tony Stark / Iron Man. At this time, none of these characters are confirmed to actually appear in the movie, though the trailer did indicate a version of Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier / Professor X will play a role.

Set after the events of 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Homethe plot of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the titular sorcerer looking into the Time Stone when he faces opposition from a friend-turned-enemy, presumably Karl Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). This releases a great evil with which Doctor Strange must contend. In attempting to combat this force, Doctor Strange will confront different versions of himself from throughout the multiverse and work with such characters as Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez).


Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness releases May 6. In addition to those mentioned above, the movie also stars Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and Benedict Wong as Wong.
